Trends have been changing a lot in the past few years. But how do you incorporate your old clothes into new trends? I’ll explain everything in this blog post!

I’m a big fan of some new trends, but if you know me, you know I preach finding your own timeless style that will last years, despite the trends. But, there are some things that you may have invested in during past trendy periods that you aren’t quite ready to get rid of. Today I’m walking you through how to incorporate some of these old clothes into new trends.

Here are some old trends you might have tried

I asked you on Instagram and these were all of the old trends that you mentioned you still want to wear!

  • Chambray shirt
  • tall boots
  • maxi skirts
  • button down gingham shirt
  • tunic length
  • colored pencil skirts
  • wedges
  • blouse-y shirts with prints
  • neck scarfs
  • peplum tops
  • a-line skirts
  • 3/4 sleeve shirts
  • preppy cardigan (buttons hits at hips)
  • khakis
  • ditsy floral top
  • puffers vests
  • colored skinny jeans
  • ballet flats
  • blazer that is’t oversized
  • peasant tops
  • olive jacket
  • corduroy pants
  • duster cardigans
  • floral print dresses/skirts
  • chevron
  • kimono style tops/cardigans

If I went through each of these, this post would be a mile long, so today I’m only going to tackle four of them….the ones that were requested over and over on Instagram!

  1. Chambray Shirts
  2. Tall Boots
  3. Tunic Tops
  4. Gingham Shirts

How to wear your chambray shirt in a modern way

We all loved our chambray shirts back in the day, and they’re still very much wearable. I still have mine in my closet!

How I wore it then:

  • Back in 2014, I wore it with the very popular statement necklaces, and some trendy bright heels. The skinny jeans are still a great choice, but I’d swap the heels for leather sandals or cute sneakers (much more practical for my life), and choose classy delicate gold jewelry. I’d also probably add a baseball hat or ponytail.

Other ways I’d wear it now:

  • Tie it around your waist with a summer dress! It creates a waist and adds a fun layer.
  • Tuck it into an a-line skirt and pair it with heels or neutral block heel ankle boots.

How to wear your tunic top in a modern way

I was CRAZY about tunics back in the day, and while the long fitted tops of yesteryear are hard to style modernly, longer (and looser) tops are still very much on trend and can be worn well!

How I wore it then:

  • Back in 2012, I wore it with the coveted leopard skinny belt (didn’t we all have those??) around the middle, some capri-length black leggings, and those t-strap sandals we all had. I’d update this outfit by ditching the belt, wearing some dark or medium wash skinny jeans underneath, adding a baseball hat, and some leather sandals. Also I’d add some delicate gold jewelry up top.

Other ways I’d wear it now:

how to update tall boots

How to wear your tall boots in a modern way

I wanted a pair of tall leather boots SO BADLY back in 2008 or 2009, and when I finally got a pair I wore them TO DEATH. These kinds of boots are totally still wearable, but here are a few tips for wearing them in a more modern way.

How I wore them then:

  • Back in 2011, I wore them with tall boot socks and blue jeans. And while you can wear them with jeans and pants, wearing them with a skirt or dress is a more modern way to try them.

Other ways I’d wear them now:

  • Try them with a knee length or shorter dress. You want at least a few inches in between your skirt and your boots. I did a Style Guide all about how to wear tall boots RIGHT HERE.
  • You can wear tall boots with skirts too! Again, make sure you have that gap between the hemline and the boot. If it’s cold, add a pair of tights underneath to fill in the leg space.

How to wear your gingham shirt in a modern way

Everyone NEEDED that gingham j.crew button up shirt back in the day, and I still have mine in my closet! It’s a great classic print, but it can feel outdated since everyone and their mom wore them and now people don’t so much anymore.

How I wore it then:

  • Back then, I wore it untucked or half tucked with cuffed skinny jeans and neon flats. I’d update this outfit with a pair of straight leg jeans, do a full or half tuck, and choose a low cut white sneaker or a leather sandal.

Other ways I’d wear it now:

  • Tie it around your waist with a summer dress! It creates a waist and adds a fun layer.
  • Tuck it into an a-line skirt and pair it with heels, ankle boots, or a pair of nice leather sandals.
