I’ve been getting a lot of tights questions the last few months as we are deep in cold weather. Here are some tips for wearing skirt and black tights outfits and keeping the outfit balanced and not so bottom heavy. These are three simple examples with dos and don’ts.
If you have ever put on an outfit with a skirt and dark tights and felt like the outfit felt “off,” this post is for you! It’s all about black tights outfits and how to balance them so your outfit doesn’t feel bottom heavy.
Black tights are my go-to during the winter, but I do own a pair of sheer polka dot tights that I wear occasionally. In this post I’ll be showing you how to wear these black tights in skirt outfits, but these guidelines apply to any color of dark tights (navy, burgundy, gray, brown, etc).

Balance the dark tights with a heavier sweater
When you’re wearing outfits with dark tights, especially with lighter colored tops, the outfit can feel a little bottom heavy.
You can absolutely wear them with lighter colors on top, but see how the thicker, chunky sweater helps balance the outfit more than the fitted top?
I chose sheer black tights because they felt a little less heavy. If I wore solid black tights, I think it would still work, but I’d probably choose a darker sweater.

Balance the darker tights with a neutral top in the same color family
This is a similar example with a silky lightweight top on the left side and a heavier weight gray sweater on the right. The difference in the weight of the top helps balance the darker tights, but also choosing something in the same color family (gray and black) helps the outfit feel more connected as a whole.

Balance the darker tights with a darker top
In the other two examples, I’m wearing a skirt in a color more similar to the shade of the tights. But can you wear dark tights with a lighter skirt? YES!
However, see how on the left, the light top with the light skirt make the black tights feel out of place?
Try wearing a dark colored top to balance the dark tights. Also you don’t have to stick to only black…you could do a dark top with a print, or a dark top in another color. Try burgundy, navy, or maybe forest green!
I hope that’s helpful as you wear tights this winter!

Hi Merrick, love your posts, thanks. How do you keep the tights from sticking to your skirt when you walk though? I used to get GOOD tights from Nordstrom but they dont have them anymore…now every tight I try results in my skirt migrating up to my bum as I walk. or the SKIRT gets stuck on the tights and hinders my walking. even with a slip they don’t work.

Hi shannon,
I’ve always sprayed hairspray inside of my dress/skirt after i put it on and the clinginess would go away. I hope it works for you too!
