Wondering what trends are coming or going for the new year? Here are my predictions for 2023 style trends, and what I think of each one!
Trends are always coming and going, and it’s hard to keep track! Here are my predictions for 2023 style trends, which ones I’m liking, hating, which ones from last year are sticking around, and which 2023 trends I’m planning to try.
Remember, you don’t have to incorporate any of these!! It’s fun to push yourself and try new styles, but also some trends are just not worth it. My advice is to have the closet staples in your wardrobe and then add a few trendy pieces here and there to make your style feel fun and current. The most important thing is that you’re confident and happy in what you wear!

Low rise jeans. Jeans went all the way up to crazy high rise, and what goes up must come down, I guess! But low rise jeans are going to be a NO from me. I’m good with mid rise (and these are my favorite mid rise jeans) and I still love my high rise jeans (although not the super, super high rise), but I won’t be wearing low rise again. I’m definitely not looking forward to seeing everyone’s underwear when they bend over. Like, look at the difference in my body shape in this post and this outfit when I’m wearing high rise vs low rise. I predict this will be a flash in the pan. I think the jeans went too high and that was short lived, and now they’re going to go low and that’ll be short lived as well. Let’s just agree to settle on something in the middle, cool?
Chelsea boots. Chelsea boots are here to stay for a while! If you are worried about investing in a pair now, not to worry — they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. I’d recommend choosing a pair that’s not so trendy…look for a pair that has an ankle bone height shaft with a slim shaft, an almond toe, and a not-too-chunky sole. My favorite black ankle boots have been discontinued, but I have a roundup of similar styles RIGHT HERE, if you’re looking for a good pair!
Lug soles. Lug soles are the chunkier style shoe soles with deep indentations for maximum grip. Some of them are definitely too chunky and over the top, but some more subtle pairs are definitely cute. Last year in my 2022 trend predictions (read it here if you missed it), I predicted they’d stick around, and here they are. I think they’ll stick around for another year, but after that they’ll be out. Lug sole loafers are definitely one of the “it” shoes for 2023 and I think we’ll see tons of them this year, and while I don’t hate them, they’re not top of my list. I like loafers, but I prefer a loafer mule to a full loafer shoe. I got this pair last month and it’s definitely the chunkiest I’ll be going. I wouldn’t invest in a pair of the super chunky ones.
Ballet Flats. Ballet flats came back at the end of 2022, and although I like a flat shoe, I think rounded toe ballet flats can make your feet look kind of stubby. I love an almond shape toe, so as long as we don’t go back to the super rounded toe, I think, in general, I feel okay about these. If you’re a flats person, I think flats are always a good option to invest in (cheap flats always hurt my feet, so be willing to spend a little more on something that’s comfortable!), but avoid the super rounded toe or super pointy toe.
Leather. Leather is going to be big for 2023, so pull your Spanx leather leggings back out (code MERRICKXSPANX works for free shipping/returns, and 10% off), or grab a pair of my favorite ever black faux leather pants, or look for a perfect leather jacket, because it’s going to be a year of leather. Personally I love faux leather, so I’m not mad about this one at all. I feel like leather jackets have been classic forever, but less trendy the past few years, so I’m excited to pull mine back into the regular rotation. They’re fabulous with dresses, jeans, and skirts. Just don’t wear leather on leather unless you want to look like you’re in a biker gang. All of these pieces are classic and are worth spending more on a good quality item.
Oversized everything. Baggy, oversized clothes have been a big trend for the last few years, and they’re not going anywhere, unfortunately. I don’t mind an oversized sweatshirt with leggings and cute sneakers, but baggy pants, or the baggy shirts with tiny shorts so it looks like you’re not wearing shorts, or oversized blazers or trousers? That’s a big no from me. Please, please wear clothes that fit you well. I think this will stick around for another few years, especially with the teens, but I’m not happy about it.
Menswear. Vests, blazers, loafers, trousers, button up shirts…they’re all major trends for 2023. I think we’ll be seeing lots of them combined for a full on menswear look. Personally I like all of them (except the pleated trousers…we just got our dads to stop wearing them like 5 years ago, what is happening!?), but I prefer them worn separately. And if you do wear these menswear styles, please choose ones that fit you! Skip the oversized madness. Menswear has been a trend for decades, so I think we’ll see elements of this for years to come, but just choose pieces that fit you well so you can wear them beyond 2023.
Blazers. I just mentioned these above, but I have to talk about them specifically because blazers have been a huge trend for the last few years and lots of you are worried about investing in one if they’re just going to go out of style again in three months. Don’t worry, they’re not going anywhere! I think a military style blazer like this one, or a plaid blazer like this one is a great choice, if you’re just buying one, because they’re interesting and a fun alternative to a leather or denim jacket, but they don’t look quite so “corporate” like a solid tan, black, or navy blazer.
Cargo pants. We saw these slowly coming in 2022, and I predict they’ll be huge by the end of the year. Personally I am not a fan. Anything that unnecessarily adds bulk to your legs is a no-go for me. Like, a huge decorative pocket right on my thighs? No, thanks. I’ll be skipping this trend. I guarantee it’ll be short lived.
Maxi skirts. Maxi skirts are a big trend coming for 2023. We’ve seen hemlines get longer and longer, and while I love a long hemline, I’m just hoping we stay away from the stretchy-dragging-on-the-floor-foldover-waistband maxi skirts of the 2010’s. But any skirt out of a structured fabric that has an a-line silhouette and an ankle length? I’m here for it. If you choose a classic silhouette like a pleated long midi skirt, that’ll be great for years. Just avoid anything too super trendy.
Crop and Bra Tops: If you were hoping crop tops would go away in the new year, I’m sorry to say that they’re probably here to stay for a while. Tiny tops, tanks, bras worn as a top under an open shirt or blazer, or even lingerie style tops are going to be sticking around this year. I love my crop tops for working out, but I’d like some slightly longer shirt options, please, and thank you. I think these’ll be around for another year, at least.
Fashion Sneakers. Fashion sneakers are here to stay!! I predict they’ll stay strong for many years, so if you’ve been thinking about investing in a pair of cute fashion sneakers, go for it! They’re my favorite kind of sneaker to wear. I’m still seeing plenty of Golden Goose sneakers, but more of the embellished style and less of the super dirty/grungy styles. Cleaner, sleeker sneakers are here, more athletic Nike sneakers are hugely trendy, high top sneakers are definitely in, and the giant chunky dad shoes are on their way out. Thank the heavens.
Colors and prints for 2023: There are a few big color trends I’m seeing for 2021…Barbie Pink, Cobalt Blue, and Soft pink/lavender. I’m excited about all of these! Also I think we’ll be seeing a lot of big bold florals and graphic prints this year.
Which of these trends are you excited for? Which do you hate? I’m talking about it this morning on instagram – go check it out!
Great tips!
