Halogen Dress (on sale!)
michael kors watch (on sale!)
I believe a woman can never have too many dresses. I was such a skirt girl up until about two years ago when I suddenly became completely obsessed with dresses. They’re so easy to make, so I often stay up late on a Saturday night and whip one up for church the next day, and my pinterest sewing inspiration board is definitely dress-heavy.
But my biggest challenge in hand-making a lot of my wardrobe is finding really great printed fabrics — there are tons of great solids, and tons of fun prints in basic quilting cotton fabrics, but when it comes to apparel fabric the printed sections are so limited. So when I found this lips print dress on sale at Nordstrom a few weeks ago, I knew I’d never be able to find a fabric like this to be able to make on my own, so I snatched it up. Because who wouldn’t want a gorgeous, pleated dress with kissy lips all over it? Plus, how amazing will this look with a leather jacket and booties in the fall, or worn as a skirt with a cable knit sweater over the top in the winter? Or with tights and knee-high boots? I mean, the possibilities are endless. Basically it’s the perfect dress, and I just wanna kiss it right back.

I wonder what it would look like if you tried extending your eyebrows in a bit, so they are closer together in the centre. I think it would really suit you!

That dress looks so cute on you. I tried it on and the fit didn’t work for my body shape so I bought the sleeveless tie-neck blouse in the same print instead. You had so many cute ideas for this dress (the tights and the sweater and such) – I’m wondering what you would do with the sleeveless blouse. What color cardigan would you put over it?

    • Merrick says:

Try it with jeans and a leather jacket, or with a boyfriend cardigan (in gray or black and white striped, or a neutral color like olive green). A regular fitted cardigan and a necktie blouse can be a little bit too mature-looking for me, so I’d personally go with a boyfriend cardigan, blazer, or jacket if you want something over the top. Also maybe try it over a little black dress. Hope that helps!

      • Kim says:

Thank you so much – you’ve given me lots of good ideas. I would’ve just put a red cardigan over it and called it a day. Your ideas are much more creative. Thank you!

cardigan: cozy fashion, shirt: stolen from Kayla, jeans: abercrombie (altered), boots: target (old), hat: made by my mom, lipstick: maybelline “are you red-dy”
A couple of years ago, I went through a little America’s Next Top Model phase. They were about to start a new season, so there were re-runs of three or four seasons all in a row. So while Philip was working long, crazy hours and I had nothing else to do (I’m sure…), I watched.
Anyway, there was this episode where Tyra told one of the models that her upper lip was too thin, and she recommended rolling up a little toilet paper and putting it inside her lip to make it look a little more full. First off, wet toilet paper makes me want to hurl. Second, that just seems so weird. And third, I have an easier solution — have Peanut kick you in the face, give you a fat lip, and then put bright red lipstick on so your upper lip looks nice and full.
I went with option #3.

I’m linking up with Kayla for the last day of The 10 Day Challenge (is it really already over?!). We’re going out of our comfort zone, and I did it with red lips AND a hat. I was a little terrified (mostly because Philip hates lipstick on me), but I actually liked it. And I’m pretty sure I’m a real fashion blogger now that I own red lipstick.

You pulled off both great! Adorable as always! Have a great weekend! (and I'm an america's next top model fan too.)

  2. Elisabeth says:

Cute, Merrick! 🙂 I share your lip woes. Last week I accidentally "punched" myself in the face while shutting off the alarm clock (Who does that? A case of being very tired and a lack of depth perception, I'm thinking). At least your puffy lip (your lipstick does a marvelous job of masking it) was the result of another human being!! Ha…

  3. TheTinyHeart says:

Your makeup looks gorgeous, I love the red lips! Red lipstick scares me too but you pulled it off amazingly well!

I think you and Tyra are crazy because I never noticed that you had a thin upper lip.

And the red looks fantastic on you! Don't listen to Phillip – he'll come around. Spencer didn't like it either at first, but now he loves it.

Aah, the hazards of motherhood. Also, I loved the picture with the hat and the lipstick, somehow they really complement each other.

  9. Mel says:

You pull off a bright lip very well! I also like your fun outfit, with the knit hat. Cute.

  10. Kayla says:

You look SO CUTE in that hat! Love it.

  11. You're completely legit now that you've worn red lipstick on your blog! 😉 But really, I think you look fantastic! It doesn't look too dramatic or drastic on you at all. Hot mama!

  12. Janssen says:

That shirt is awesome. I have TWO of those hats from Mom, but it's never cold enough to wear here.

  13. You look great, Merrick! I don't blame you for getting sucked into America's Next Top Model. Whenever I catch those season reruns I get sucked in too!

I love, love the red lips. I have that same shade of lipstick, but it looks nowhere near as fantastic on me as it does on you. I especially love it with the blue tones of your outfit. Pretty!
