How to Wear a Pleated Midi Skirt for Work

Looking for more office outfits? Here are some great ways to wear a pleated midi skirt for work. Whether you’re in a business formal or business casual setting, here are some great office outfit ideas.

I love midi skirts – especially in the spring. A lot of people have been asking for more work-friendly outfits (you can see a ton of options in my Outfit Guide RIGHT HERE), so I put together some looks to help you wear a midi skirt for work.

5 Ways to Wear a Pleated Midi Skirt for Work

1. Wear with a sweater

A pleated skirt and pullover sweater make a really gorgeous combination. The angular pleats against a soft sweater are a good contrast, and you can either half tuck or fully tuck, depending on the size and weight of your sweater.

If it’s a chunkier knit sweater and will cause bulging around your waist with a full tuck, do a front tuck only. If it’s too chunky to do a half tuck without adding bulk to your front, keep it untucked. If your sweater is longer and creates a boxy shapeless look when untucked, leave it untucked but try belting the sweater around the waist.

2. Try it with a blazer

A pleated skirt and a blazer go really well together. Wear a simple tank or tee or bodysuit underneath, and choose a blazer that has some shape (not boxy) and isn’t too long or oversized, since that will create a really boxy look with a long full skirt.

3. Try belting your blazer

This is another fun way to wear your blazer and a midi skirt…add a belt! It creates a really nice shape, especially with a boxy or oversized blazer. You can wear a tank or tee underneath, but I’d recommend something that’s a little lower cut in the front so you keep your neckline area open. This helps draw attention up to your face. A crew neck top underneath could create a sort of restricted look up at the neckline.

4. Try your pleated skirt with a cropped jacket

If you want to go for a slightly more casual look than a blazer, a cropped jacket is another good option. I like a denim jacket or cropped suede jacket, but you can do whatever jacket you’d like. The shorter length helps the skirt stand out and also helps define your waist, which keeps your outfit from feeling boxy and shapeless.

Underneath the jacket you could do a t-shirt or tank or camisole, or a bodysuit!

5. Pair your pleated midi skirt with a button up shirt

This is one of the most iconic kinds of pairings — a classic button up shirt with a skirt. You could do this with a printed button up shirt, an oversized or more fitted option, you could button it all the way up or leave the top few buttons undone, and of course you could layer a jacket or a vest or a sweater over the top. The possibilities are endless!
