One of my most frequently asked question is how I curl my hair. Here’s a basic hair tutorial to show you how I do it!

How do I curl my hair? Let me show you.

Back in 2016, I made a video of how I curl my hair and shared it here on my blog. I still use the same techniques, so I’m re-sharing the video, even though I use a few different products now.

Which curling iron do I use?

In the video below, I’m using the NUME MAGIC WAND, but that was four years ago it died a year or so after I filmed this video. I replaced it temporarily with a cheap CONAIR CURLING IRON. For under $10, it did the job great, and I actually loved that I could use the clamp to hold my hair, rather than having to hold my hair against the curling wand. I still used the same wrapping techniques around the entire barrel, and then clamped the last little bit.

Last year I upgraded to a T3 CURLING IRON, which is on sale right now during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale if you want to check it out.

I honestly recommend all three of them — they’ve all been great hair tools.

Do I use any products for heat protectant?

YES! I just started using heat protectant a few years ago. I use NAVY HAIR CARE’S WHIRLPOOL MOUSSE. It’s lightweight, and is a styling product and heat protectant. You can use code MERRICK for 20% off any of their products.

Do you still use the same hair products in the video?

I have an updated post HERE with the products I use.

How I Curl My Hair (Video Tutorial)

How I curl my hair

One of my most frequently asked question is how I curl my hair. Here’s a basic hair tutorial to show you how I do it!

How do I curl my hair? Let me show you.

One of my most frequently asked questions is how I curl my hair. So today I’m showing you a quick video with exactly how I do it. It’s not overly complicated and you can definitely copy it with your hair, even if it’s shorter than mine.

Which curling iron do I use?

I use the  T3 CURLING IRON, which is on sale right now during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale if you want to check it out.

I’ve used different curling irons over the years and this is definitely my favorite. It’s lasted for many years, curls evenly, and I love that you can adjust the barrel to be wider or narrower (I use the 1″ most often) and also adjust the heat setting.

Do I use any products for heat protectant?

YES! Heat protectant is so important to keep your hair from getting excess damage when using hot tools. I use NAVY HAIR CARE’S WHIRLPOOL MOUSSE when I’m blow drying my hair and it’s coming from being wet or damp. It’s lightweight, and is a styling product and heat protectant. You can use code MERRICK for a discount on their products.

If I’ve air dried my hair, I always use BONDIBOOST’S HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY. It has a very fine mist, and although it makes your hair wet momentarily, it dries quickly and doesn’t leave any sticky or stiff residue AT ALL.

What products do you use after curling?

I use Navy Hair Care’s TEXTURE SPRAY for body and holding my curl and their SEARCH AND RESCUE SERUM for smoothing the ends of my hair and keeping them from breaking.

This is great, but I’d love to know how to keep the curls intact for more than a day. I’ve tried a bun at night, or even two buns, and I always have to re-curl at least part of it in the morning. What’s your trick?

    • Merrick says:

I touch up my curls every day — they don’t last for a whole week without having to re-curl them. And I sleep in a high, loose pony at night (use a scrunchy or something so it doesn’t create a bump)!

So what happened with the Living Proof products? Would you no longer recommend those?

    • Merrick says:

I definitely still recommend! I just get sent a lot of different products to try so I’ve been trying out different ones. But the living proof products are fantastic — especially their dry shampoo!

I watched your video and decided to try it out (with my normal curling iron). Loved it! It created a completely different more effortless look than the spirals. Thanks for inspiring creativity in us that follow your blog!

I’ve been thinking about getting living proof products and you talked about them in some of your earlier posts but aren’t using any in this tutorial! Just wondering if you think they work still?

    • Merrick says:

I definitely still recommend! I just get sent a lot of different products to try so I’ve been trying out different ones. I do like the pureology shampoo better, but the dry shampoo and the condition from LP are both fantastic.

Where are the shorts from in the first picture with the white top? : )

  16. Really random question, but what do you do when you shower? How do you keep the steam from the shower from weighing your curls down and having them fall out? I’m so tired of washing my hair everyday and your technique sounds so easy! Thanks for sharing.

    • Merrick says:

I pull it up in a bun and then when I’m out of the shower I let it down and let it COMPLETELY dry again. Then dry shampoo and touch up any curls that need a little boost. Hope that helps!

  17. Carrie says:

I know you said you usually just wash your hair once a week. Do you workout? I do almost everyday and my hair just gets really greasy from the salty sweat on my head. I’m wondering how to go a week without washing if that’s the case. Any tips are so appreciated!!! Loved the tutorial!

    • merrickwhite says:

yes, I do workout! I just let the sweat air-dry, and then use a good amount of dry shampoo. I create parts all along my head and spray along the part so the hair gets nice and clean. It works!!

  18. Becky says:

Lovely loose curls, I have a beach wedding to go to coming up and this style would be perfect, especially with some flower clips or a hair vine.

So who do you buy your hair products through? I was just looking through amazon and there have been some that say they are watered down, or fake, etc.

Thanks for sharing! Wondering is you’ve ever done a hair porosity test and what kind of hair you have to see if your products woulD work on my hair. I have low porosity hair.
