One of my most frequently asked question is how I curl my hair. Here’s a basic hair tutorial to show you how I do it!
How do I curl my hair? Let me show you.
One of my most frequently asked questions is how I curl my hair. So today I’m showing you a quick video with exactly how I do it. It’s not overly complicated and you can definitely copy it with your hair, even if it’s shorter than mine.
Which curling iron do I use?
I use the T3 CURLING IRON, which is on sale right now during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale if you want to check it out.
I’ve used different curling irons over the years and this is definitely my favorite. It’s lasted for many years, curls evenly, and I love that you can adjust the barrel to be wider or narrower (I use the 1″ most often) and also adjust the heat setting.
Do I use any products for heat protectant?
YES! Heat protectant is so important to keep your hair from getting excess damage when using hot tools. I use NAVY HAIR CARE’S WHIRLPOOL MOUSSE when I’m blow drying my hair and it’s coming from being wet or damp. It’s lightweight, and is a styling product and heat protectant. You can use code MERRICK for a discount on their products.
If I’ve air dried my hair, I always use BONDIBOOST’S HEAT PROTECTANT SPRAY. It has a very fine mist, and although it makes your hair wet momentarily, it dries quickly and doesn’t leave any sticky or stiff residue AT ALL.
What products do you use after curling?
I use Navy Hair Care’s TEXTURE SPRAY for body and holding my curl and their SEARCH AND RESCUE SERUM for smoothing the ends of my hair and keeping them from breaking.

You’re so kind — thank you!
This is great, but I’d love to know how to keep the curls intact for more than a day. I’ve tried a bun at night, or even two buns, and I always have to re-curl at least part of it in the morning. What’s your trick?
I touch up my curls every day — they don’t last for a whole week without having to re-curl them. And I sleep in a high, loose pony at night (use a scrunchy or something so it doesn’t create a bump)!
Thank you for this tutorial! I love your hair and follow all your tips for hair washing as well. I even have my friend hooked on your hair wash tutorial as well.
Can you please list your products as well?
they’re all over under the video on youtube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XoD7BW0lRQ
I’ve always had a problem trying to curl my hair. Tip no 2 and 4 were really helpful. Thanks a lot. 🙂
Awesome tutorial! Really enjoyed that – thanks a mill!

What are beachy curls?
They’re the imperfect, loose waves that imitate the natural curls people get from humidity at the beach.
So what happened with the Living Proof products? Would you no longer recommend those?
I definitely still recommend! I just get sent a lot of different products to try so I’ve been trying out different ones. But the living proof products are fantastic — especially their dry shampoo!
I watched your video and decided to try it out (with my normal curling iron). Loved it! It created a completely different more effortless look than the spirals. Thanks for inspiring creativity in us that follow your blog!

Love the curls! Can you talk more about your color?
Just ordered mine—-great discount, and a very helpful tutorial for the “hair impaired” like me. 🙂 Thanks!
Just ordered a new one as well and send the link to this post to like 5 of my girlfriends! Thanks for the tutorial and discount code!
I’ve been thinking about getting living proof products and you talked about them in some of your earlier posts but aren’t using any in this tutorial! Just wondering if you think they work still?
I definitely still recommend! I just get sent a lot of different products to try so I’ve been trying out different ones. I do like the pureology shampoo better, but the dry shampoo and the condition from LP are both fantastic.
Good to know. Thanks so much!
Where are the shorts from in the first picture with the white top? : )
Details are in this post! https://www.merricksart.com/2016/07/how-to-style-bermuda-shorts.html#/
Thanks! I LOVE your site and your hair tutorial too!
Really random question, but what do you do when you shower? How do you keep the steam from the shower from weighing your curls down and having them fall out? I’m so tired of washing my hair everyday and your technique sounds so easy! Thanks for sharing.
I pull it up in a bun and then when I’m out of the shower I let it down and let it COMPLETELY dry again. Then dry shampoo and touch up any curls that need a little boost. Hope that helps!
I know you said you usually just wash your hair once a week. Do you workout? I do almost everyday and my hair just gets really greasy from the salty sweat on my head. I’m wondering how to go a week without washing if that’s the case. Any tips are so appreciated!!! Loved the tutorial!
yes, I do workout! I just let the sweat air-dry, and then use a good amount of dry shampoo. I create parts all along my head and spray along the part so the hair gets nice and clean. It works!!
Ive tried sO many dIfferent hair curling methods And tutorials, but this is my fave!!!! So glad I found it. So fast and easy and perfect for every day curls! Thanks!!!
Lovely loose curls, I have a beach wedding to go to coming up and this style would be perfect, especially with some flower clips or a hair vine.
So who do you buy your hair products through? I was just looking through amazon and there have been some that say they are watered down, or fake, etc.
[…] then pull my curls so they don’t end up too tight and ringlet-y. I made a video of how I curl my hair RIGHT HERE that you can watch. The tighter curls, even when pulled, last much longer. Using a 1 1/2″ or 2″ barrel […]
Thanks for sharing! Wondering is you’ve ever done a hair porosity test and what kind of hair you have to see if your products woulD work on my hair. I have low porosity hair.
I lOVE YOUR WHITE TOP! WOULD YOU PLEASE SHARE WHERE IT IS FROM?
