Five Months

Five things about baby F this month:

  1. His hair has become so light! I’m shocked when I look back and older pictures and realize how dark it used to be. I think he’s just trying to fit in with all the California blondies πŸ™‚
  2. He had a horrible two weeks of no sleeping this month — up nearly every hour at night, tiny cat naps during the day, tons of screaming, and lots and lots of nursing (which never seemed to make him much happier). We were total zombie parents, and nearly sold him to the gypsies a few times, but then two days ago, just like that, he suddenly was back to sleeping through the night.  I’m praying that we’re out of the woods, and I’ll be catching up on sleep for at least the next month.
  3. We started giving him rice cereal about two weeks ago and although he did really well with eating it, it seemed to upset his stomach (which might have been the cause of so many sleepless nights?), so we’re back off of it for now.
  4. He’s started getting really interested in grabbing things lately, and my favorite is when he reaches up to grab my face while he’s nursing or while we’re playing. Those little hands are constantly moving, exploring everything around him. Often he’ll hold his hand up in front of his face and open and close his fist, just staring at it as if it’s the most interesting thing in the world.
  5. He has started sitting up for short periods of time, and although he typically folds in half or leans back within a few seconds, my personal favorite is when he tips over, like this:
Happy five months, little man!

  3. Jen says:

  4. AmyBean says:

  5. Rachel says:

He is just the cutest. I love his little cheeks.
Also love your couch- where is it from?

  6. Claire says:

Tipping over– it's so cute it makes me laugh! πŸ™‚

  7. So adorable. Makes me so excited for the imminent arrival of our little boy!

  8. He is ridiculously cute. What a little sweetheart!

For the cereal, if you decide to wait until six months, give an organic brand a try. The mainstream brands have a lot more ingredients, so it's difficult to figure out if a baby is reacting to the cereal/grain itself, or one of the additives (a friend's little guy had an awful reaction to nestle rice cereal….and come to find out it's because he has a milk allergy).

Healthy Times is a good one that just has rice/oatmeal/etc. in their cereals. It's always baffled me that we are supposed to be so careful at introducing foods one at a time, and yet the 'first food' a baby has is full of so many things!

  9. Jess says:

He is the cutest ever! I love his expression in the second one, like "Something has happened. Everything has turned sideways. Are you seeing this too Mom?"

Okay, first of all, his hands clutched in the first picture? ADORABLE. Second of all, him tipping over in the second picture? I have to admit, I giggled a little bit. When babies tip over and don't have the strength to balance out, it's the most tragically cute thing I've ever seen. Your little guy is SO CUTE.

Five Months

Dear Peanut,

Last night I looked through the pictures from the day you were born. You seem like an entirely different person now, and you almost look like an entirely different person. It’s hard to believe that scrawny little squish that couldn’t hold his head up is now the giggly chunker that rolls around the house. Sometimes I miss that little tiny guy and get excited for when baby #2 will come and I can have another newborn, but I wouldn’t change your hilarious and silly five month personality for anything.

Yesterday I was taking on the daily challenge of feeding you solids. After trying peas and getting rejected, I tried cereal and got rejected. You turned up your nose to avacados, so we finally tried bananas. I was feeding it to you in my tiny purple anthropologie bowl, which you found completely enthralling. If I put the bowl on your high chair tray, you put all your energy into reaching that bowl. If hid it in my lap and you strained to see over the tray. Finally I let you hold the bowl and then you contentedly ate all the banana. Hmm…I wonder where you get that stubborn personality.

The older you get, the more wiggly you get. I’m constantly having images in my head of you being three years old, and the amount of endless energy I’m sure you’ll have. It makes me tired just thinking about it. But in the mean time, I’m enjoying every tired moment when the wiggling stops and the cuddling begins; when you can’t even keep your head up and just pass out in my arms. Despite my concerns about forming bad habits of falling asleep in my arms, I can’t help but let you do it every once in a while because, like my friend said, “love is never a bad habit.”

You’re my sunshine, little dude.

Love, Mommy
