Trying to figure out what to wear to a wedding?

There are lots of weddings happening right now as people’s cancelled weddings are now being rescheduled. I’m getting emails and messages regularly asking for advice for what to wear to an upcoming wedding! So this week’s WHAT TO WEAR post is all about what to wear to a wedding.

We’re covering four different dress codes today, which should, for the most part, cover all your bases.

The most important tip when choosing an outfit for a wedding

Here’s a really helpful tip when figuring out what to wear to a wedding. Always err on the side of overdressed, rather than underdressed!

You can always take off some jewelry, or a man can take off his tie. But if you walk in obviously underdressed, there’s not much you can do.

This tip actually applies to events in general. Overdressed is always better than underdressed. Remember that.

What to wear to a black tie wedding (formal)

If you get a wedding invitation that says the dress code is “Black Tie” or “Formal,” this means it’s very dressy.

A floor length gown, or a formal cocktail dress is acceptable. Check with the bride or bride’s family to see if she’s expecting long gowns. But if you forget to check, or feel uncomfortable checking, choose a long gown.

I’ve rounded up a few dresses below that would be appropriate and beautiful for a black tie wedding.

What to wear to a a “cocktail attire” wedding

Cocktail attire dress code is pretty self explanatory — choose a cocktail dress! But alternatively, a dressy jumpsuit is also a great option and a little bit unexpected.

What to wear to a “semi-formal” wedding

The invitation may say “semi formal” or “dressy.” In this case, choose a cocktail dress or dressy top and skirt. Also a fun dressy jumpsuit totally works here too.

I’ve rounded up a few pieces below that would be appropriate and beautiful for a dressy/semi-formal wedding.

What to wear to a daytime/casual/informal wedding

For this kind of dress code, you can go way more casual. Choose a sundress, a more casual skirt and top, or even a nice, but not dressy, jumpsuit.

DO NOT wear jeans.

What if the invitation doesn’t have a dress code?

If the invitation doesn’t specify a dress code, you can ask the bride, OR dress for semi-formal.

I hope this is helpful as you prepare for those weddings!

For a less formal or outdoor wedding, the dress code may be more relaxed, but it’s still important to dress appropriately. Women can wear a sundress, a skirt and blouse, or a jumpsuit, while men can wear a sport coat, khakis, and a dress shirt. It’s important to avoid anything too casual, such as ripped jeans or flip-flops, as this can show a lack of respect for the occasion. When it comes to accessorizing, it’s best to keep it simple and let the dress be the main focus. Avoid wearing anything too distracting or overly flashy. In conclusion, choosing the right outfit for a wedding can be challenging, but with some consideration and planning, you can ensure that you look and feel your best. A stl wedding planner can also be a great resource for advice and recommendations on what to wear to a wedding, as they have experience with a wide variety of wedding styles and dress codes.
