Today I have a really fun, easy, and inexpensive DIY project for you: a wallpaper wall mural! I did this in just a few hours with my kids and it makes our playroom so fun.

This wallpaper wall mural is easy and inexpensive!

Today I’m really excited to show you the wallpaper wall mural that we did for our playroom! This project cost me about $65 with paint and wallpaper and looks so great.

There are two really tricky things when you build a house. One is that it costs a freaking lot of money to build and furnish everything. And two, it’s hard to come up with design ideas for so many spaces all at once.

How we came up with this idea for the playroom wall mural

When we were trying to come up with design ideas for the playroom, I was at a total loss. I was completely burned out of ideas and couldn’t think of how to make the room fun, but also sophisticated, and not crazy expensive or time consuming.

Then I ran across THIS PICTURE on Pinterest, and immediately fell in love with the idea of a dark wall with stripes like this. Then after I saw that picture, I found THIS PICTURE and was obsessed with the dark paint and gold lines.

Here was the problem…I don’t own a saw, and had no interest in cutting all the pieces. And then I thought of it…WALLPAPER!!

Other wallpaper projects we’ve done in the past

Walls Need Love sells THESE WALLPAPER STRIPES for only $12 a roll, and since I’ve used their wallpaper many times before (our powder bathrooms HERE and HERE, our baby nursery HERE, the boys’ bathroom HERE and the boys’ room HERE), I knew that the quality would be great.

Materials you’ll need for this project

  • Walls Need Love wallpaper stripes (My wall used 2 1/2 rolls in the color “Gold”)
  • Scissors
  • Exact-o knife (comes in the Walls Need Love order)
  • Level
  • Ladder
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Step by step instructions to create this wallpaper wall mural

Step 1. Decide where you’re going to start your stripes. I didn’t plan out the whole wall in the beginning. It felt like too much effort for me, so I just figured it out as a went along. But I decided on two main lines first and then built from there.

Step 2. For each stripe, measure the space where the stripe will be. Point A will be where the stripe starts, and Point B will be where the stripe ends. Make tick marks with a pencil from point A to point B, using the level to keep them nice and straight.

Step 3. Start at point A and stick the wallpaper strip to the wall. As you move toward Point B, follow your tick marks and slowly pull the backing from the wallpaper stripe as you attach the stripe to the wall. When you reach the end of the stripe, cut the wallpaper stripe from the roll.

Don’t pull the entire backing off at once or the wallpaper will stick together!

Step 4. Once the stripe is on the wall, go back with the level and check to make sure it’s straight, and stand back away from the wall to make sure it looks visually straight. Adjust if needed.

Step 5. Use a dry sponge or the palm of your hand to smooth the line and make sure it’s fully attached to the wall without bubbles or creases. Walls Need Love’s stripes come with a pad for smoothing it on the wall.

Step 6. Use an exact-o knife as needed to trim the long edges on corners and at the baseboards.

Repeat all these steps until your wall mural is done. Get creative and do any pattern you’d like!

My kids loved helping with this project and it turned out SO FUN. It’s a great statement wall!

Hi, I found this post, as the husband and I are travelling to San Diego for a week in May! Our favorite part of travelling is finding off-the-beaten-path places to eat, and he takes pride in ALWAYS finding the best obscure places.Thailand vacation packages all inclusive
