Our home theater room is one of my favorite rooms in our new home! With beautiful wall paneling, and a big couch bed, it’s a movie lover’s dream.

Our new home theater room is perfect for movie lovers like us

When we bought our new house, and I mentioned that it had a home theater room included in the floor plans, many people recommended turning into into a home gym or a playroom. But we’re total movie lovers, and have family movie night almost every weekend. So we were super excited to turn this into a really cozy space.

What we wanted for this home theater room

We went through a lot of design ideas before landing on the layout and design of this room.

Here was our criteria for the home theater room:

  • Large TV or projector
  • Huge, comfortable couch
  • Dark wall color for best movie viewing

Why we decided on a TV versus a projector

At first we planned to do a projector in this room and face the couch toward the far wall. But the room is actually fairly narrow, and the cut out in the one corner made it tricky to fit a big couch vertically across the room.

So instead, we opted for a large TV on the longer wall, which gave us more couch options.

Finding the perfect couch for this room

Most home theaters have big reclining chairs, or layers of couches. But since our space is pretty small, a couch was the best option. I discovered a “modular couch” somewhere along the way — it’s a kind of sectional that you can re-arrange in various ways.

A modular couch is the perfect kind of couch for this space because we can turn it into a giant couch bed when it’s family movie night. And then when we have friends over, we can pull the ottomans out and make it a true sectional.

We looked online at a ton of different couches, but buying a couch online is so stressful. So we went to our local Nebraska Furniture Mart and found THIS COUCH and purchased it in the fabric called “stone gray.”

It’s a really high quality couch, for the price, and I could not be more happy with it!

These are the pieces we purchased for our modular couch

  • 2 ottomans
  • 2 corner seats
  • 4 armless seats

Deciding on the wall paneling for our home theater

Philip had the idea to do wall paneling on the walls of our home theater room, and I’m so thrilled we did it. We hired a local wood worker, showed him some design ideas (like this one), and he went to work.

The millwork really gives the space so much personality and makes it feel finished.

Our millwork squares are roughly 21″x 22″ squares — we measured it so they would fit perfectly across the length of the wall.

The paint color we chose

The color we chose for the walls was actually a custom color, chosen to match the built ins that our custom builder created for us.

I have the exact formula in the photo below!

Finishing the room with details

Of course the room wasn’t complete without some finishing touches.

We added THESE BLACK SCONCES to the wall behind the couch, and then covered the couch in a ton of pillows that we found at World Market and also on Amazon.

And we found the FLOOR CUSHIONS right here.

This room is just so cozy, inviting, and fun. I’m obsessed with how it turned out. If you have any other questions about it, leave a comment!
