All the details from our update to the boys room — removable vinyl wallpaper, two coats of paint, and new pillows made a huge difference!
Ever since we moved in to our house, two years ago, I’ve been wanting to do something with the boys room. I loved their room in our old house, but the furniture and various pieces didn’t translate as well in the new space and it always felt a little lackluster.
But I’m certainly not an interior designer, so I had no idea where to start.
Our starting point was Walls Need Love’s wallpaper
All I knew was that I wanted to use Walls Need Love wallpaper in there somewhere. We’ve used their removable wallpaper in several places in our new and our old home (the boys bathroom HERE, our downstairs powder room HERE, and our laundry room HERE), and it’s incredible quality while being super easy to install and remove.
I stewed over various ideas for months, pinned a ton of ideas on my house decorating pinterest board, and suddenly it just all came together in my mind.
I decided on this black and white “Ab Outlines Black” geometric patterned wallpaper from Walls Need Love’s black and white collection, and love that it adds some interest without being overwhelming.

An accent wall with removable vinyl wallpaper
We decided to create an accent wall with our Walls Need Love wallpaper, and the cutout where their desk sits was the perfect place. It makes a statement wall without being overwhelming.
The plan is to install a white built-in desk and shelving unit in this cut-out space and have the wallpaper showing behind the built-in. I’m so excited for that. But for now, it’s a great accent wall behind their desks, and I love the statement it makes on the large wall and high ceilings.
I made a video about installing this wallpaper here if you want to check it out!
Painting the walls gray
For the rest of the walls, we used Sherwin Williams “Light French Gray.” We debated between tons of grays, and I’m thrilled with this one. It’s a perfect neutral gray that’s not too dark and not too light, and not too blue and not too tan.
Storage in the room
When we decorated the boys room in our old home, we got THIS BUNKBED, but never put in the drawers that go underneath. We finally built and installed those and they’ve added a ton of lego storage.
Along with the built-in desk and shelving, we plan to put a window seat in the wall cut out under the window. I’ve always wanted a window seat!! But until the built-in and window seats are installed, we’re using these 2×2 bookcases from IKEA, and these 15 qt STORAGE BINS to store all their legos.
Our great LEGO sorting project
Over the summer, we spent an entire month color sorting all their legos, and I have to tell you it’s been amazing. Once we were done, I made them solemnly swear that they would keep them sorted, and we keep an extra bin in their bunkbed drawers for “pieces that need to be sorted” and we go through those once a week and re-sort.
This sorting has made it so much easier for them to build and play because they know where to find pieces!
New pillows are a quick and easy way to update an old couch
We’d eventually like to get a new couch for this room, but for now some new pillows make a big difference. It’s an easy and quick fix.
I found this beautiful buffalo plaid lightweight flannel in the apparel section at Joanns (it’s brand new so I couldn’t find it online), and used 2 yards to make these three envelope style pillows (no zippers!). I used THESE PILLOW FORMS, and I love how they turned out.
Simple DIY Wall Art
This big wall above their couch was so empty and boring, but I didn’t want more picture frames since the other wall has a large frame already. So I made a quick last minute decision and bought these large wooden letters from Joanns, painted them black, and then nailed them to the wall (they don’t have any hanging tools on the back).
I think it’s so bold and fun.
Boys room makeover conclusions
I’m such a believer in making a house a home, and it’s amazing how two coats of paint, four strips of wallpaper, new pillows, and a little cheap wall art makes a huge difference.
After we painted the room and put up the wallpaper, B kept saying, “it feels so cozy in here!” I cannot wait to get that window seat in there and then I will literally never leave that room.
I’ve linked everything I can think of down below, but if you have any other questions about the room, leave me a comment!

LOVE the bold, simplicity of the boys’ room! Where do you keep their clothes? Do they all hang in a closet or do you have them stored some other way?
They have a closet! You can see it on my instagram stories today – I gave a full room tour so you can see the space a little better!
