Platform sandals are super in for the spring and summer, but how do we wear them without looking like a teenager? Here are some tips on styling these chunky sandals.
Do you have a pair of platform sandals? You may be seeing them pop up in a lot of spring and summer trends. They can be hard to style without looking like a teenager, but I have some tips to help!
Styling Platform Sandals
Platform sandals are super trendy this summer. I try to keep my style pretty classic and I don’t jump on every trend, but this is one that I actually think is pretty easy to style and looks good on everyone.
Tips for wearing platform sandals
- Choose neutral platform sandals. There are a lot of wild and bold platform sandals out there right now, and while they can be cute, they’re also harder to wear and much less versatile.
- Avoid an overly lug sole. The super clunky and chunky soles feel extra trendy.
- Pair them with classic, age appropriate pieces. Since they’re more trendy, don’t pair them with several other trendy pieces – stick to more classic outfit pieces.
Outfit ideas with platform sandals
1. Cut off shorts and a tee
Platform sandals are kind of “better than basic” sandals, since they have a little clunky sole. Pairing them with a basic outfit like cut off shorts and a tee makes the outfit feel a little less basic. Don’t forget accessories!
2. Wide leg jeans and a tee
I love wide leg jeans (especially these white ones from Madewell) and they pair well with a heavier shoe because of the wide leg. Since the pants are white and the sandals are darker, I think a darker tee helps to balance the outfit.
I love a jumpsuit for summer, and these platform sandals add a fun statement to a basic jumpsuit! A baseball hat isn’t necessary, but I love it an as accessory.
4. Casual dress
A casual dress is a great outfit to wear with platform sandals. You don’t want to pair them with super dressy dresses, since they’re so casual, but a casual dress is great with them. This casual dress is my favorite for the summer!
How NOT to wear your platform sandals
There aren’t many outfits that you can’t wear platform sandals with, but here are a few examples!
When wearing them with a lightweight flowy skirt, the platform sandals can feel a little too clunky. This example isn’t terrible, but a slimmer sandal feels better to me.
This kind of pleated skirt is much more dressy than the floral skirt, and definitely feels out of place with a chunky sandal, no matter how neutral it is. I traded for a slim block heel sandal and that makes it feel way more feminine and sleek.
A dressy dress, especially a little black dress, deserves a dressier shoes. I traded for a pointed toe pump and that feels much more formal with a formal dress.
I’ll be doing a Get Dressed with Merrick episode on my instagram tonight – don’t miss it!
