The boys just started school yesterday, so over the last few weeks we’ve been fitting in a few last days of summer fun. Although the beach is typically our go-to, since it’s so close, the boys always love days at the park. And when the weather isn’t sweltering (like it has been the last few weeks), I don’t mind it so much either.

But whenever we go to the park, or really anywhere, my boys instantly become little camels and snack monsters, so having a bag that I can carry my wallet, phone, a few little snacks or our sack lunch, a giant water bottle, and anything else we need (like a few little crusts of bread for the ducks) is a must. Lily Jade has been my go-to for amazing large handbags for a few years, and they just launched a new line of bags.

I’ve owned their Madeline bag for a couple of years and I’m completely in love with it — it’s made of gorgeous leather that has become so soft and supple after all of my use, and the pocket situation is out of this world. The Shaylee bag, the one I’m wearing here, is from their new collection and although it has a similar shape to the Madeline, and also becomes a backpack, it has a few upgrades that I’m super excited about. One is the gold hardware, which makes it modern and sophisticated. A lot of gold hardware I’ve seen looks cheap and plastic-y, but this hardware is beautiful and gives the bag an updated look. It also has two pockets on the front, rather than three, and both of them are zippered, which is amazing for holding my phone and not having to worry about it slipping out. And three, it doesn’t have the top flap over the zipper, which I never particular disliked, but I did find it got in the way every once in a while.

I love all your outfits, but I just have to ask. How do you wear heels when running around with your kids?!?!? I laugh at the thought but at the same time I seriously want to know. I would love to wear a wedge bootie out my kids but the thought just stresses me out!

    • Merrick says:

The only heels I’ll wear when running around are chunky heel ones, like the ones I’m wearing here. And I make sure they’re not too high. It does take some getting used to if all you wear is flats when running around, but your body figures it out pretty quickly 😉 Good luck!

What hair products do you use? I feel like since having my first, my hair is kinda flat looking, like it lost it’s shine.

I just discovered this blog and I’m in love with it. As a mom of 2 boys I need practical clothes that are still cute, I love your tips on the momiform! I also like the diaper bag but it’s more than I can afford, can you recommend another cute diaper bag that’s versatile for everyday use?

  11. Tabitha Teixeira says:

I was wondering how it compared to the Madeline (which I’ve been eyeing for 6 months now). I think the Shaylee is a better fit for me now reading your review. Thank you!

  12. Ashlee Bradshaw Barnhill says:

Okay, I honestly have been in love with Lily Jade ever since you first posted about your bag. My question is, is it worth it? I’ve never had designer anything, and I’m pregnant with #4, which is hopefully last, so I’m really wondering how much I’ll use it, and if the cost is worth it. I’ve thought about just getting the insert which is genius and just using that in a tote. Do you have any thoughts??

    • Merrick says:

Yes, yes, yes. It’s definitely a hefty price tag, but this is a bag that keeps getting better with time. It just gets softer and slouchier and more beautiful the more I use it. I do love the structured bags out right now, but this is such a simple, classic bag that you can use for years. Hope that helps!

      • Ashlee Bradshaw Barnhill says:

So which one do you like better? The Shaylee or the Madeline?

      • Merrick says:

I like the Madeline better because I’ve used it more and it’s so soft and slouchy, but I think I’d like the Shaylee better if I’d had it as long. The front pockets have zippers, which helps keep things more secure, and the hardware is gold and so nice on the Shaylee.

      • Ashlee Bradshaw Barnhill says:

K last question, and thanks so much for all your input! Do you think the brandy color goes well with everything? What about the camel color? I’ve almost narrowed down what to get (once I finish saving!!!) good luck soon with that baby! Mine is due July.

      • Merrick says:

I think both go super well with everything, but I personally love the brandy color. Good luck with your baby!

I know this is an old post, so I’m not sure if you’ll even see this comment, but now that you’ve had the Shaylee for a few months and have had a little time to break her in, do you find yourself reaching more for one or the other? If you could only have one, which would you personally choose???? I know each of us has different needs, so that factors in to it, but I’m getting ready to buy one and find myself going back and forth between these two! Well, actually, if Rosie had the backpack option, I’d probably choose her in a heartbeat, but for the occasional time I need the backpack function (airports!! we travel a lot to see family), I really want to be able to convert it to a backpack. Thank you!!!!

    • Merrick says:

Get the Shaylee! The zippered pockets are the deal breaker for me. Especially if you travel a lot, you’ll like having your little things secured in those front pockets. Hope that helps!

      • McKenzie Davis Brown says:

Thanks! That does help! I’m now sold on a getting a LJ Shaylee . . . just need to save up enough in my “slush fund” for it 🙂 I did also run across this Bodomint bag (http://www.bodomint.com/shop/bodomint-bag-striped) in my search and I thought I’d let you know about it because it seems like your style with the stripes, black and brown combo, leather details, etc. I still think the LJ is number 1 and a better investment overall (more versatile, full leather, completely zips closed, lighter colored lining so things don’t get lost, retain their value, etc), but this definitely caught my eye and is in my top 5 brands/styles I like for diaper bags . . . maybe even top 3. Thanks for your tips on the LJ!! Love your blog!
