I love putting together a good monochromatic outfit – they’re stylish, simple, and classic. Here are 5 cute and easy looks to copy.
Trying to put together a monochromatic outfit?
Monochromatic outfits are clean, simple, and classic. If you want your outfit to feel elevated, a monochromatic outfit is a great way to go.
They can be tricky to put together, but I’m sharing 5 looks to copy and giving you tips to pull this look off.
Tips for putting together a monochromatic outfit
- Mix and match shades of that color (ie. tan, cream, brown)
- Choose different fabrics for lots of texture (ie. fur, leather, chunky knits, etc)
- Don’t be afraid to throw pops of print into the outfit…a leopard shoe or bag is a great idea.
- Add some other colors for contrast, if needed
- Don’t forget accessories to add some sparkle to the outfit.
1. Monochromatic black outfit
I’ve been getting the same question about black on black outfits for the last few months…
“If I’m wearing black on black, do the blacks have to match??”
Nope, the blacks do NOT have to match! Try different materials…suede, leather, knits, printed black pieces, fur, etc. They can all be mixed and matched without any worries. If your outfit has pieces that are similar fabric and are obviously different shades of black, don’t mix more than two of those pieces. If they’re all different fabrics and textures, mix ten if you want!

2. Monochromatic tan/cream/white
I love mixing and matching cream, tan, or white to create monochromatic outfits.
Try mixing darker and lighter shades, and using pieces with different fabrics to add lots of texture.

3. Monochromatic red
During the holidays, there’s no better time to try a monochromatic red outfit than right now!
Try all the same (or similar) shades of red, or add some darker burgundy in there for a little depth. You can even do red shoes and a red lip!

4. Monochromatic Burgundy
Burgundy is such a fun color to wear during the winter. It’s not overly Christmassy, but still feels festive, and is so feminine.
Try similar shades, or darker and lighter shades!

5. Monochromatic green
This is one of my favorite color combinations to do. I have this dark green coat I found at J.Crew a few years ago and it’s the most gorgeous dark teal. It looks amazing with a dark teal green sweater or dress.
If you’re wearing a dress and a coat for your monochromatic outfit, you can mix up the shoes, if you want. Try something classic like black or nude, or add a pop of print, like leopard.
In this case, I paired the green coat, a green sweater, and green shoes together, and then kept my pants as a neutral pair of jeans.
