Every time I wear my hair in a top knot, I get a request for a tutorial. I’ve tried the sock bun thing, and it’s just a little too tight and stiff-looking for me. I prefer more of a messy look, and apparently some of you do too.

So here’s what I do.

Aww you are so cute! Can't wait to do this again when my hair has grown again; it's still shoulder length after I finally donated it in October. I didn't think I would say this with two little kids underfoot all day, but I really do miss my long hair!

If only my hair wasn't a greasy mess after 1 day haha

    • Try switching your shampoo. I have to switch mine every few months because my hair adjusts and then starts getting greasy much faster.

Also, try dry shampoo — I use Suave (the silver bottle with the yellow lid) and it works wonders on cutting greasy hair on the second, third, fourth, and even fifth day after washing 😉

  6. If only I had your length…love this look and adore that top so much 🙂

Now we just need to know how you do your makeup!

  8. If only I had long/thick hair to do this! You make it look effortless (which I'm sure doing this tutorial took you WAY longer than it would to actually fix your hair like this!)

Love this tutorial, I'm definitely going to try this. I think it's crazy all the different ways to get a top knot that look completely different. 🙂

  12. Wow it looks fabulous! Love the two tones in your hair. Makes it look even better!

  13. Okay, I'm definitely the most hair-challenged person I know, so this isn't saying much, but I've tried this three times and keep getting lost at the "figure 8." 🙁 Seriously though, I can't even do a French braid so it's probably just me. My hair is probably at least a few inches shorter than yours though (mine is armpit length for lack of a better description). 🙂

    • The figure eight means you just pull the hair tie over the bun and then twist it once. Then once it's twisted, pull it back over the bun the other way. Does that make more sense?? Sorry — I'm having a hard time describing it better than that…

  14. Wearing this bun to work today! Absolutely love it. So easy to do and it actually turned out like it was supposed to! xx
