Oversized clothes are super trendy right now, but it’s easy to drown in fabric when you wear them. So here are some tips for how to wear oversized clothing and get that slouchy, chic style just right.
Wear oversized clothing without looking schlumpy
Wondering how to wear oversized clothes? Let’s talk about how to wear oversized outfits!
We all love slouchy, comfy, oversized clothing, especially when we’re stuck at home. But often, oversized clothing does your body no favors and you end up looking schlumpy and shapeless.
BUT! With a few tips and adjustments, you can absolutely make them look chic and effortless!
Here are some examples of how to wear oversized or baggy clothing:
This isn’t an all-encompassing list, but it’s most of the ones I wear or that are trendy right now.
- boyfriend jeans
- oversized sweatshirts
- oversized sweaters
- shawls
- blanket scarves
- slouchy cardigan
- wide leg trousers
- oversized t-shirts
- slouchy dresses
- boyfriend blazer
Four easy tips for how to wear oversized and baggy clothes:
1. Define your waist with oversized pieces
Defining your waist isn’t possible with every oversized piece, but it is with some!
- Wide leg, boyfriend, or slouchy pants: tuck your top into your jeans, or wear a cropped top to show your waistline.
- Oversized cardigans: tuck your top into your jeans under the cardigan, or belt your dress under the cardigan.
- Oversized tees: Fully tuck or half tuck your shirts to define your waist

2. Balance oversized with fitted
I talk about this more in my BALANCING AN OUTFIT post here, but an easy way to offset baggy clothes is to wear them with fitted clothing.
- Oversized sweaters, t-shirts, and sweatshirts: wear them with skinny jeans, leggings, biker shorts, or other fitted bottoms to offset the volume.
- Oversized cardigans, jackets, and blazers: wear them with a fitted dress, fitted pants or jeans, or a fitted top underneath.
- Wide leg or oversized pants: try them with a bodysuit or another fitted top

3. Layer or pair your oversized items with structured pieces
Oversized pieces are usually slouchy and often shapeless. Choose structured pieces to bring some balance to the outfit. Structure pieces are items that have shape even when you’re not wearing them, like a tailored blazer, a fitted leather jacket, or sturdy jeans (not jeggings).
- Slouchy dresses: Give it some structure with a blazer, a leather or suede jacket, a belt, or some chic pumps or boots.
- Boyfriend jeans or other oversized pants: Pair them with a blazer, a blouse with puffed sleeves, or a tailored coat.
- Oversized sweaters: try them with fitted trousers, nice jeans, or lace up ankle boots.
- Oversized blazer: Choose structured shoes, like pointed loafers, and jeans with some shape.

4. Show some skin with your oversized pieces
I’m a very modest dresser, so I’m not encouraging crazy amounts of leg or chest with your outfits. But showing some skin helps your shape still show.
- Oversized sweaters: Try sweaters with a lower or wider neckline so you get a little neck showing.
- Oversized t-shirts: roll up the sleeves so your arms don’t disappear in fabric
- Oversized dresses: Choose ones that show at least some leg — they don’t have to be mini dresses, but at least show a little ankle or knee, and choose shoes that don’t completely constrict your foot (a classic pump or sandal are great choices — a tall boot may not be the best choice).
- Oversized cardigans: choose tops underneath that are v-neck or scoop neck so you get a peek of decolletage.

I hope this helps you wear oversized pieces well!
