Over the last few years I’ve seen the mix of horizontal and vertical stripes on top and dresses and have completely fallen in love with the look. I’ve seen them at Madewell, Anthropologie, and all over Pinterest, and after drooling over them for months, I finally decided to make my own.
I found this gorgeous ponte knit dress at old navy, and when it was on big time sale and I had a coupon, I snagged two of them to cut up and make my own horizontal-vertical striped dress. It was really easy and I love how it turned out. I also thought about adding sleeves with the leftover fabric from the second dress, but in the end I decided to keep it sleeveless since I think it’s a bit more versatile for layering (but you can easily add sleeves if you want them).

Materials:
two dresses (or one dress and extra material) (mine were from Old Navy)
matching thread
scissors/rotary cutter

Step 1. Try on your dress and determine where you want to cut the hem. Pin to mark, and then remove and cut evenly around the hem.

Step 2. Take your second dress and cut it up to create strips long enough to fit around the whole hem of the skirt.

With right sides together, sew the strips together (making sure the stripes match up!) with a straight stitch, then trim the seam allowance and zigzag or serge the raw edges. Press all the seams flat.

Step 3. Once the strips are all sewn together, pin it to the dress with right sides together and sew around the entire hemline with a straight stitch. Trim the seam allowance and serge or zigzag. Press.
Step 4. Hem the dress to your desired length and you’re done!

  1. Oh this is beautiful! And such a clever refashion. I have to admit I am a sucker for stripes these days, and have also loved the horizontal stipe paired with vertical – your dress is very similar to the dresses I made for my flower girls earlier this year: http://su-sews-so-so.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/diy-i-do-flower-girls-dresses.html

That is just genius! Buying two pieces on sale that don't quite fit yet or aren't the perfect piece you were looking for and refashioning them into something you love. Easy and yet genius! Thank you for sharing!

I'm pretty sure this is one of my favorite refashions you've done. I love it!

  4. I love this redesign! It really makes the already cute dress pop even more! and I love how it adds a little extra length to the dress too.

  13. This is so beautiful!!!!!! Thank you so much for the tutorial. I am trying to sew, but I can't still go to sewing school and I really appreciate those easy tutorials 🙂

Oh..internet doesn't like me today. 3rd time trying to post my comment. Anyway, turned out great. Saw a similar style on Pinterest but of course it's unavailable and looked too short. Just got 2 sizes off Old Navy's website–it says fitted in top and want to make sure it's not to tight in the bust. $18 each today + 35% off today= $23.40 for both. 🙂 Can't wait to try this tutorial out. I have a dress form I also should be putting to work–right now my kids think it's great to throw fabric on it and play hide & seek.
