For Sanny’s birthday last week, we did a Harry Potter-themed birthday celebration for his golden birthday! Here’s everything I ordered to decorate and celebrate.
Last week was Sanny’s golden birthday…your golden birthday is when you turn the age of your birth date (he turned 6 on the 6th).
One of you suggested a Golden Snitch from Harry Potter theme to celebrate the “golden” birthday. We turned that one suggestion into a whole Harry Potter birthday celebration for him and it was so fun and special. Here is everything I bought for his big day!
Harry Potter Birthday Party Ideas
If you want to do a Harry Potter birthday, a few things are simple and easy that make a big statement.
How we hung the flags and floating candles
We got the Hogwarts and House flags from Amazon and just used tape to hang them up on our windows. They ended up being the perfect fit!
I also found an entrance to Platform 9 3/4 with a slit so you could walk through the barrier, and the space between the wall and the pillar in our dining room was the perfect fit to hang it. I had planned to hang some floating Harry Potter letters above the brick wall entrance, complete with the wax Hogwart’s seal, but I ran out of time. You can only do so much!
I was dreading doing the floating candles, but it was actually much easier than i expected. I used Command Hooks on either side of the room toward the ceiling, and then created a knot in the fishing wire to loop around the hook. Then I spaced the candles about two feet apart and looped the fishing wire twice around the top of the candle stick (where the stick meets the flame) and knotted it. These candles light up when the flame part is twisted on (after you’ve added batteries), so once the flames were twisted on completely, the loops and knots stayed in place perfectly. I strung 4-5 across and then created another loop knot and hooked on on the Command Hook on the opposite wall. I did three strands total. I planned to do more, but three gave the effect without taking a ton of time.
Other touches to make the room feel magical
We found these Butter Beer drinks at a local treat shop, but you can find them RIGHT HERE online.
I also found this star projector light so the ceiling was filled with stars and a dark blue sky, just like in the Hogwart’s great hall.
A few other touches that made it super fun were the potions bottles filled with food colored water and random ingredients (we had some jelly slug candy we added to one, and old almond butter covered almonds that looked like eggs once they went in. Spooky!)
We also had gold balloons since it was Sanny’s golden birthday, and the decorated the table with gold touches like plates, goblets, candlesticks, and bird cages, and of course we had to have chocolate frogs. (but we also had Sanny’s favorite cake…Butter Cake!)
