cardigan: target, tunic: h&m (seen here), green pencil skirt: made by me, tights: f21, patent leather wedges: forever young shoes

Remember when I went to LA’s fabric district with my mom and scored all those awesome fabrics? Well I’ve been working my way through the stack for the last few months, and finally arrived at my beloved grass green twill.  When I bought the fabric, I had a specific skirt in mind that I wanted to make — one that I’d pinned (and could never find the original source for). I scoured pencil skirt patterns online and at the fabric store, but couldn’t find anything even close to what I wanted.

Finally I settled on Butterick’s B5566 and went with version C. I reversed the front skirt piece so the point was inverted, and then added an extra inch or so to the sides for the pleats. Then I used the larger of the cross-in-front pieces, folded it in half and adjusted it enough to make the pointed waistband.

I LOVE how it turned out. It was the perfect pencil skirt I was hoping for. Although the sizing on the pattern was off (according to the sizing charts I was supposed to make a size 12, but I ended up having to take it in about 3 inches), it fit like a glove once all was said and done. The fabric does get pretty wrinkly (I’d been sitting down all morning at church so those lines on the waistband are wrinkles, not fabric pulling), but the color is gorgeous and fun, and this will definitely be my go-to pencil skirt.

I have a baby houndstooth fabric that I’m dying to make into a pencil skirt just like this one, so if you’re lucky I’ll make a little tutorial for the pattern adjustments. And if I’m lucky, I’ll put pockets in it this time around.

I’m linking up with EBEW: Black and White today. We’ll see if anyone else does a primarily non-black-and-white outfit like me. Oops.
