Scarves have become less trendy in the last few years, but in super cold climates they’re a necessity and can still look fabulous in an outfit. Here are some tips for how to wear a scarf in a winter outfit.
Why the “before” winter scarf outfit needs improvements:
It’s honestly hard to tell how MUCH bulk there is in this “before” outfit. With a huge blanket scarf and a puffy jacket, I felt like the Michelin Man. Puffy coats and blanket scarves do not mix well. If you’re doing a blanket scarf, keep your outerwear slim, or skip the outerwear altogether and just wear it with a slim sweater.
Since the outfit is already so bulky, adding bulky boots is not a good idea. You’ll be clunking around everywhere and feeling anything but comfortable. I think Hunter rain boots are cute, but they’re not super easy to wear around.
Can you wear earrings with a scarf? Heck yes! They’ll help add a little sparkle among all the fabric of the coat and scarf. Just keep them small and simple — no big dangly earrings.
A few easy ways to help you figure out how to wear a scarf:
A wool peacoat is a much better coat option with a scarf. It’s still warm, but you have almost no bulk.
I really like blanket scarves, but they are massive and sometimes hard to manage. Instead, a long, thin scarf can keep you just as warm, but make less bulk around your chest.
A small hoop or stud earring adds just enough sparkle without getting in the way.
Ankle boots are a better option with a coat and scarf outfit. They’re neutral and not clunky. You can add tall socks underneath with an inch or two peeking out, if you need a little extra warmth.

i would LOVE to see posts that take, for example, the sweatshirt that DOESN”T work, and show how that WOULD work. same with other items you switch out – if we have the offending items in our closet , how could we wear them better/correctly?
What color socks would you add in the “after” outfit?
