In the winter, big, warm coats are a necessity! In some places you can get away with a lighter weight coat, but this post will cover winter coat outfits and how to wear them without looking like a snowman.
Why the “before” winter coat outfit needs improvements:
First of all, the sweater is much too long. I’m all about tunic sweaters with some outfits, but this is not one of them.
When you have something bulky on top, balance out the outfit with slim on the bottom. A thick pair of Levi’s jeans isn’t the best pants option with these boots and this big coat.
With tall boots, you create a nicer leg line when your pants either go over the top of the boot or tuck inside. These Levi’s jeans hit right at the top of the boot and create bunching and the illusion of thicker legs.
A coat this big and puffy should be the statement of the outfit. Don’t compete with other pieces that stand out, like big prints, super distressed jeans, or loud shoes.
A few easy ways to improve your winter coat outfits:
A shorter sweater elongates your leg line, rather than shortens it and gives you a squatty look. Either choose something shorter or give your sweater a tuck or half tuck!
To bring some attention up toward your face (so you don’t get lost in the oversized coat), and give you some extra warmth, add a fun beanie! This one adds a pretty pop of color without competing with the coat.
Instead of a pair of thick, light wash denim, a sleek black pair of leggings is a great, neutral option that gives you that “legs for days” look.
Whatever pants you choose, make them long enough to tuck into your tall boots!
If you’re more of a visual person, here’s the same advice in action
Looking to add a few winter coats to your closet this season?
There are so many out there – puffer coats, long coats, short coats, wool coats. Here are a few good ones!
Other winter coat outfits to give you some inspiration
Why these outfits work:
There are lots of ways to wear a winter coat! I hope the outfits above help you realize there’s no ONE RIGHT WAY to do it. But all of these outfits on other women are balanced, accessorized well, flattering, and cute. Use them as inspiration!
Now go wear your winter coats, and wear them well!

really interesting how you’ve styled things and I’ll look for ways to improve. However, many of us do live in cold places so having a duvet coat for instance is essential but pointless if your bottom half is freezing because you’re wearing leggings
