Over the summer I attended a Fabric Weekend in LA with a bunch of apparel seamstresses. I wrote a tiny bit about it here. For two days we shopped the LA fabric district and at Mood, ate really good food (like bacon wrapped hotdogs from a street cart), and had a total blast hanging out with like-minded women (baby Buck was the only man there… ;))
In fact, while I’m mentioning it, let me share a couple of photos from the weekend, since I never did (and I took a bazillion).
Anyway, while we were shopping at Mood, a few of us came across some amazing abstract floral knit, and we decided to give ourselves a bit of a challenge — everyone gets one yard, and we all make something fabulous. So today is our day to share our projects with you!
me, leanne, melissa, miriam, jen, and andrea (bethany got a cut of it too but she wasn’t here for the photo)
I went back and forth with my fabric, and finally decided on a midi pencil skirt. It took a little trial and error, and a bunch of alterations at the end to get the perfect fit, but I’m thrilled with how it came out. I styled it with my favorite chambray and a knitted infinity scarf to make it feel a little more fall-ish.

  1. Every time I check out your blog, I am saddened by my lack of sewing skills! : ) I keep telling myself that someday I will sit down at my machine and crank out a project that looks amazing…hopefully that day will come. Until then, I love seeing your creations! This skirt is perfect!

I love this! I used to sew a lot and want to get back to it. I need to invest in a new sewing machine though. Do you have any suggestions on a machine under $200?

    • Hmm…I don't really have any good specific suggestions. I'd just recommend reading reviews, and going for a big brand name machine. Also, try not to buy the cheapest model since even the big brands have cheap junky ones. I have a Kenmore that's at least 15 years old and it's still going strong because it's a good brand and a good machine. Hope that helps!
