A Simple Summer Service Project You Can Do With Kids

back to school service project

Looking for a way to help your kids think of others this summer? This is a simple and meaningful service project that we are doing and you can do with your kids.

This summer has been filled with lots of fun. Travel, swimming, sunshine, relaxing, and playing with friends.

But I couldn’t let this time off end without helping our family think of and serve other people!

My husband’s work is doing a back to school service project for underprivileged kids in our area, collecting back to school supplies for them. Walmart is our one stop shop for school supplies when I’m getting things for my kids, so we got a list of supplies needed and headed to our local Walmart to find backpacks, paper, binders, pencils, and all other school supplies for these kids in need. They had everything we needed, and huge selection — the boys had so much fun choosing backpacks and other cool school supplies for these kids.

If you email your PTA or your child’s school, they can help you find families in your area who need back to school supplies. It’s a simple way to help, but it makes a big difference for these families!

Walmart also has a really cool system in their Back to School section – you type in your location and school name and it’ll give you the supply list for each grade! You can check that out right HERE.

Here’s what I found at Walmart for this service project

In store and online, Walmart had literally everything that we needed for Back to School supplies.

You can just order online, but I took my kids into the store so they could be more involved and choose the backpacks and binders and other school supplies for these families.

Each of my boys put together one backpack of supplies, so they got to choose the backpack and the individual supplies. They had such a good time selecting everything and thinking of what that child (who they didn’t even know) would like, and putting in the cart, checking out, and then assembling the backpack at home.

It was a super simple service project, but will make a big difference for the kids we’re serving. We’ve decided to do this every year from now on!
