Out of all the skirts I own, pleated midi skirts are my favorite. They’re feminine, easy to dress up or down, and super flattering. I’ve put together four pleated skirt outfit formulas, and eight different outfits to give you some great outfit ideas.

Pleated skirt outfit formula #1: Add a sweater
A skirt and a sweater is a great outfit combination for spring. It keeps you feeling cozy but still super chic.
I put together two cute outfits with this red pleated skirt:
- Add a belt and tuck the sweater in. This creates a really nice waist definition and makes the outfit feel sophisticated. You could wear this with boots or loafers if heels aren’t your style.
- Half tuck the sweater for a more casual look. Half tucking a sweater can be a little tricky – it works best with light to medium weight sweaters, never with full tucks.

Pleated skirt outfit formula #2: Layer a jacket
A cropped jacket is my favorite layer with a midi skirt. Skip the long jackets so you still get a nice elongated leg line — a cropped jacket will hit just above or at your hip bone, and that keeps your leg line long. Make sure to tuck your top into the skirt to get some waist definition under the jacket.
- A denim jacket is always a good and spring-y option! A light wash denim jacket is my go-to layer in the spring. With a nice flat oxford shoe, this outfit feels fun and simple.
- Suede jackets are great for a more chic look. I love my cropped suede jacket – it goes with everything. This jacket feels a little more structured and sophisticated, so I added some tan ankle boots to elongate the leg line and also match the dressiness level of the jacket.

Pleated Skirt Outfit Formula #3: Basic black top
When in doubt, try a black top. Words to live by, am I right? I have two easy options, and both are chic, sophisticated, and timeless.
- Black bodysuit. If you don’t own a bodysuit already, I encourage you to try one! They’re so great for layering or wearing by themselves, and you get that smooth tucked in look without worrying out bulk. If you are nervous about the snaps underneath, just keep them unsnapped but tucked in. Easy solution!
- Black turtleneck. Hello, most timeless look ever. I love my tissue turtleneck because it’s great for layering but also perfect for tucking into jeans and skirts because there’s no bulk.

Pleated skirt outfit formula #4: The Casual Top
There are lots of great options for this formula — I wanted to show you two easy ones:
- A midi skirt and a graphic tee. The combination of an edgy graphic tee and sneakers mixed with a feminine pleated skirt is just so fun. I added some gold earrings to make the skirt make more sense — otherwise the skirt would feel too fancy for this outfit. Also I knotted the graphic tee to give myself some waist definition.
- A casual button down shirt and midi skirt make for a feminine and easy outfit combination that still feels casual, but nice. You could dress this outfit up with heels or heeled boots, but I wanted to keep it casual so I stuck with a slide on flat.
