You guys often ask me which of the items I buy are worth the splurge.

OR…

Which items do I wear over and over again?

In 2018 I purchased a lot of closet staples, and several household items that I can’t live without, so today I want to tell you which ones were my best purchases. Eight things that are on constant rotation, and I never get tired of them.

My eight favorite purchases from 2018

Coop Home Goods Pillow.

I went on the hunt for a great pillow after some major neck and back pain. I found this Coop Home Goods pillow on Amazon, and I fell in love with it the moment it arrived. It has cooling properties so it doesn’t get too hot as you sleep, it’s firm enough to give support but is very very soft, and it keeps its shape nicely. Philip stole it from me the week I bought it, so I bought a second one so we could both have one. I wrote a whole post about this pillow RIGHT HERE.

American Eagle black jegging jeans

I bought these black jeans from American Eagle on a whim, and now they’ve become one of my most worn pairs of jeans. I adore them. They’re flattering, comfortable, a good length for boots or for sneakers, and even after washing them about 50 times, they still haven’t faded. Also, I wear a size 4 Regular, and I’m 5’6″.

M.Gemi Nude Loafers

These flats were a splurge item in 2018, but I’d been looking for a good pair of neutral loafers for ages and these ones were perfect. I’ve dressed them up with dresses, and down with jeans and a tee. They say that a nice pair of shoes and a nice handbag can make any outfit look expensive and chic, and these shoes 100% prove that statement.

Apple Watch.

Philip bought me an Apple Watch for Christmas last year, and although at first I wasn’t sure how much I would really use it, I have used it every single day since I got it. I wrote HERE about all the ways I use it, as well as which series I have.

Handheld steamer.

The older I get, the more I dislike ironing. Mostly I hate pulling out the ironing board and iron, and waiting for it to heat up all just for one quick shirt that has a few wrinkles.

So I bought this handheld steamer and keep it in my closet. It heats up instantly, and I can steam a top right outside my closet in less than 2 minutes. Worth every penny!!

Madewell leather tote.

I’ve been wanting a leather Madewell tote for literally six years, and finally this year was my year. AAAAND it’s been everything I hoped and dreamed of. It’s the perfect color, it just gets more buttery and beautiful with age, and it holds a ton of stuff. Also you could get a purse organizer and toss it in if you need more pockets or organization.

Mott and bow jeans.

I learned about Mott and Bow jeans early last year, and finally tried a pair for myself. I got the mid rise waisted dark wash skinny jeans, and during the colder months when I’m wearing a lot of black and dark wash denim, I’m wearing them almost every day. They’re soft and comfortable with the perfect amount of stretch, and they’re so flattering.

Wool J.Crew coat.

I grew up in Las Vegas, and now have lived in Southern California for six years, so I never really had the need for a good wool coat. Well, I did live in Utah for 8 years, but I was young and dumb and never bought a proper winter dress coat. Anyway, I finally invested in a beautiful wool coat this year. This one from J.Crew is so beautifully made, super warm, and so flattering.

Good exercise to look back and see what really worked. I finally bought NYDJ jeans in straight dark rinse and they’re on at least twice per week. Now I’m thinking of buying the faded version. And my clarks booties in brown (I’d call it tan). I get compliments every time I wear them… and I wear them often.

Don’t you love when you invest in good pieces and it pays off?? Thrilled that you’re getting good use out of those pieces!

THIS MIGHT BE FUNNY THAT I REMEMBER THIS, (I HAD BEEN LOOKING AT MADEWELL TOTES FOR A LONG TIME SO MAYBE THAT’S WHY), BUT I SEEM TO RECALL YOU HAD A STRIPE TRANSPORT TOTE YOU BOUGHT FROM THE NORDSTROM SALE. DID YOU END UP RETURNING IT?

    • Merrick says:

Yeah, I ended up returning and getting the plain brown one because I felt like it was more versatile and classic long-term! Good memory! 😉

This sounds like such a great trip and I just love your little collections of mementos! I’m heading to Paris for the first time later in the fall and would love a travel guide — especially on places to eat!
