If you’re a woman who carries weight in your middle or has the “mom pooch,” here are three clothing styles to look for that help downplay that area and flatter your figure!

What to wear if you carry weight in your middle

Many of you around here are moms, and ask me questions about how to hide or downplay that “mom pooch” that many women get after pregnancy.

Today I’ve teamed up with Walmart to show you three outfits that will be great for camouflaging that middle weight.

The great thing about these outfits is that they’re all super affordable.

Why you should shop at Walmart for these pieces

If you’re postpartum, or losing weight, or you’ve put on some pandemic pounds, and you’re trying to dress a temporary body type, shopping at Walmart is a great way to go. You can have cute, on-trend pieces without spending a fortune.

But also, if you’re on a budget or don’t want to spend much on your clothes, these are great pieces for the end of summer and into fall.

They have so many cute pieces right now. I’m especially loving their pieces from their new Free Assembly line — great quality, sustainable, and affordable.

Three cute outfits that camouflage the “mom pooch”

A swing style dress like this one from Walmart is a fantastic choice for camouflaging the mom pooch. Some swing dresses get clingy to any weight in the middle, or they’re too billowy and make you look larger. But a style like this that’s not too swing-y, and has the gathered tiers, really smooths over any middle weight.

When you wear a flowy dress, try adding a bit of structure to your outfit with a structured jacket. It adds great balance to the flowiness and gives you shape.

If you want to wear jeans and a top, this kind of top is fantastic. It has a slight swing shape as it heads toward the hem that breezes over the middle while still giving the bust some shape.

Lots of swing tops are so swing-y that they take over the outfit and give you a tent shape…not good. This is a much better shape.

The fuller sleeves and square neckline are great to balance and show some neckline.

I’ve said it a million times before, but tops made with fabric that have STRUCTURE are so important. This top is made out of a thicker material that smooths over any weight in your middle.

I bought this top in yellow in the spring and loved it so much that I had to get the navy for fall.

Again, the shorter length top is GOOD. Longer tops create weird emphasis on your lower half. This length covers the pooch but keeps your leg line longer.

Also the structured flutter sleeve is great for drawing attention up away from your middle and toward your face.

Today I want to show you a few outfits that will be great for camouflaging that middle weight.

Easy and cute outfits that camouflage the “mom pooch”

A swing style dress is a fantastic choice for camouflaging the mom pooch. Some swing dresses that are thin fabric can get clingy to any weight in the middle, or they’re too billowy and make you look larger. But a style like this that’s not too swing-y, and has the gathered tiers, really smooths over any middle weight.

When you wear a flowy dress, try adding a bit of structure to your outfit with a structured jacket. It adds great balance to the flowiness and gives you shape so you it doesn’t get “tent-like.”

Try a swing or peplum style top

If you want to wear jeans or leggings and a top, try a slightly flared, swing, or peplum style top. The one I’m wearing has a slight swing shape as it heads toward the hem that breezes over the middle while still giving the bust some shape.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR:

  • stiffer or thicker fabrics that won’t cling or hang on your middle
  • shorter lengths that keep your leg line elongates but still cover your middle
  • longer tunic lengths that fall below the hips and can be worn with skinny jeans or leggings
  • pretty prints that can camouflage even more (not necessary – solids are great, but it’s another way to downplay that area)
  • loose and boxy peplum shapes (like this)

THINGS TO AVOID:

  • super lightweight and clingy materials
  • lengths that hit right at your widest part (hips or stomach)
  • swing shapes that hug up top and then emphasize your lower area (like this)

Also many swing tops are way too long and create weird emphasis on your lower body. this shorter length covers the mom pooch but keeps your leg line long and keeps the emphasis away from your hips.

The fuller sleeves and square neckline are great to balance and show some neckline.

For structured tops like this, the shorter length is GOOD. Longer tops out of a thicker material might be too heavy or create too much bunchiness. This length covers the pooch but keeps your leg line longer.

Also the structured flutter sleeve is great for drawing attention up away from your middle and toward your face.

Thanks for this! I live in a small town and it’s hard to know by shopping online if the tops will have structure. What size is the navy top that you’re wearing?
