Building a great wardrobe that fits your style and budget can be a slow process. I wanted to share some monthly tips to build your closet one classic piece at a time.
The question I get asked the most is how to build a good closet with classic pieces that you’ll actually wear. The easiest answer is that classic closets take time to build. I’ve found that breaking it down month by month is an easier process for your wallet!
Here are some closet staples I wear a lot in January, with shopping options for each.
January Closet Staples
3 Closet Staple to Prioritize Buying This Month
1. BLACK BOOTS. Black boots are a total closet staple for me during the winter. I have several pairs — short, tall, casual, and dressy, but my most worn pair is my favorite CHELSEA BOOT. It’s the kind of shoe you can dress up and dress down. You can see me wear them HERE in over fifty ways.
But I also love having a DRESSY PAIR, and a TALL PAIR, and an OVER THE KNEE PAIR. You can decide what style is right for your closet, your personal style, your budget, and your weather. Plus, it’s important to think about which style will work with things you already have in your closet.
2. CLASSIC COAT OR TRENCH (depending on your weather). This is a closet essential! Choose something that works for your weather and your style, and that is classic and simple enough to wear with lots of things. I prefer a single breasted wool coat in either black or tan, and about knee length.
If you’re doing a trench coat, you could do something in a classic tan or black in a long length, or you could do a cropped length in navy or olive or something a little more fun and unexpected.

3. CLASSIC SWEATER. If you don’t have a classic sweater in your closet, it’s time to get one! Every store has an option, and you can decide if you’d prefer crew neck, v-neck, or cardigan style. All are great options, it just depends on your preference. The classic part comes with the fit. Choose something that fits you well and isn’t overly cropped or long, tight or oversized. It should just have a “classic fit.”
A neutral sweater, like tan or black or navy or gray, goes with everything, but if you want to add a pop of color here, that’s also a great idea. You could do bold red, a pretty soft pink, something burgundy or dark green….whatever you’d like!
My favorite place for high quality classic sweaters that are still affordable is QUINCE. You can get cashmere and 100% cotton sweaters for great prices. THIS CLASSIC PULLOVER is a favorite, and THIS CARDIGAN is another favorite. They run a little small, so size up!

I hope this is helpful! This year I’ll help you build an amazing closet full of classic pieces!
