It’s day three of Closet Spring Cleaning week, and after cleaning out your closets, it’s time to start filling them back up! These are 12 wardrobe essentials every woman should have in her closet.
It’s time to talk about wardrobe essentials!
I’m so excited about today’s post, because it’s all about WARDROBE ESSENTIALS! These are basic things every woman should own.
We already cleaned out our closets, so now it’s time to make sure you have all those closet essentials back in your closet.
If you missed the earlier posts, they’re right here: CLEANING YOUR CLOSET and FINDING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
Your lifestyle, personal style, and location will affect your wardrobe essentials a little bit
Wardrobe essentials are going to look slightly different for everyone, depending on your location, your personal style, and your lifestyle. So I’m telling you 12 essentials you should own, and then giving a few options for each of these essentials so you can choose what works for YOU.
Here are the 12 closet essentials you should own
1. JEANS
Jeans are an absolute must in any woman’s closet, and go with everything.
These are my most worn styles of jeans:
- Hi-rise white skinny Levi’s jeans
- Hi-rise black Madewell jeans
- Hi-rise, medium rinse Madewell jeans
- High rise light wash Levi’s jeans
Read this post about HOW YOUR JEANS SHOULD FIT right here.
2. DRESS UP TOPS
These are the shirts that are appropriate for date night, church, girls night, or the office. They can be button down shirts, silk blouses, lace tops, or just a shirt that’s a step above a t-shirt.
I always share a lot of good top options under my “Date Night” category on my outfit guide!
3. LIGHTWEIGHT JACKETS
Of course heavier coats are an essential, but I’m not going to talk about them specifically since they’re not typically a layer you wear with an outfit all day.
Lightweight jackets are great for spring, fall, and cool summer evenings.
These are my favorites:
4. SNEAKERS
I live in sneakers pretty much everyday. But even if you don’t wear sneakers everyday, you should definitely own at least one pair of sneakers for traveling, weekends, walking, or just casual days.
If I had to recommend one pair of sneakers…
it would be THESE ECCO SNEAKERS. They’re insanely comfortable, go with everything, and are a low profile so you can wear them with jeans, skirts, dresses, and shorts.
5. DRESSES
Dresses are my go-to for easy one-and-done pieces. This is why I created my clothing collection of women’s casual dresses!
I love casual ones paired with sneakers for everyday mom-style, nicer ones with wedges for date night, or dressier ones with heels for church or weddings. Your location, lifestyle, and body type will determine whether you choose maxi, midi, or mini length, long or short sleeve, or fit and flare or shift style.
But I recommend having at least these three dresses:
- Little black dress
- White dress
- Casual dress (there’s a shortage of good ones of these, so check out my clothing line!)
My “Dress It Up” category on my blog always has a bunch of good dress ideas!
6. T-SHIRTS
Tees are an essential for my closet! I wear them as layers under jackets and cardigans, and they’re great for basic outfits.
My most worn tees are:
7. FLATS
Flats are great for work, dressing up your basic mom outfits, wearing to church for a more comfortable outfit, or wearing for date night. They’re literally the most versatile shoe in your closet.
My most worn pairs of flats are:
8. PULLOVER SWEATERS
Everyone needs a few pullover sweaters to wear from fall to spring.
My most versatile ones are:
9. BOOTS
Depending on where you live, you might wear tall boots, ankle boots, over the knee boots, or winter boots.
I think every woman should have at least one pair of ankle boots in her closet. I own a few over the knee and tall boots, plus combat and winter boots, but my most worn boots are ankle boots. They go with skirts, dresses, jeans, shorts, and leggings.
These are my most worn ankle boots:
10. ACCESSORIES
There are so many items that could fit under the umbrella of accessories. But let me tell you my top 5 that get the most use in my closet:
I’m excluding bags and sunglasses from this list because they’re not pieces you wear all day with your outfit. But of course those are important!
11. HEELS
In my closet, a pair of nude or black pumps is essential. Your lifestyle or preference might lead you to wedges, dressy boots, or dressy flats instead. Just keep them neutral, versatile, and classic.
My most worn heels:
12. HANDBAGS
I really love handbags, and actually own quite a few, but I only wear a handful regularly.
These are my most worn handbags:
Pretty much everything in this huge list is neutral and really versatile. After you have all these basics in your closet, then it’s time to add the fun stuff that brings out your personality!
Here’s your homework for today:
- Go through this list and make your own list of what you’d like to add to your closet. Remember, put it in your Notes app so you can reference it easily.
