Fall might be my favorite season to get dressed, and I think a big reason why is the jackets.
There’s something about throwing on a jacket over even the most basic jeans-and-a-top outfit that instantly makes you look more pulled together.
But I also think jackets can be tricky to shop for. There are SO many styles out there, and you don’t necessarily need a closet full of them. What you need are a few different silhouettes that each serve a purpose and work with the clothes you already own.
So today I’m breaking down some of my favorite fall jacket styles, from casual everyday layers to more statement-making pieces. These are the jackets that can take a simple outfit and make it feel like an actual outfit.
And the best part? Most of these work with jeans, so you don’t have to completely rethink your wardrobe every time you put one on.
1. Amazon Olive Rain Jacket
If you buy one casual jacket for fall, make it a utility rain jacket.
I love a good utility jacket because it has that effortless, slightly casual feel, but the right one can still look really polished.
This olive version is a great example. The cropped length works especially well with high-rise jeans because it hits right around the waist and gives the outfit some shape.
I also love styling a utility jacket over something a little more feminine. In the photo, I paired it with a lace-trimmed top, which keeps the jacket from feeling too utilitarian.
Try it with: jeans, feminine blouses, striped sweaters, sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots.
2. Abercrombie Gingham Jacket
Don’t underestimate the power of a printed jacket.
A jacket in a print or pattern can do a lot of the work for your outfit. You can wear the simplest tank or tee underneath, add jeans, and suddenly the whole outfit feels much more interesting.
I especially love this navy-and-white gingham because it’s classic without feeling boring. The shorter, boxier shape also works really well with a wide-leg or straight-leg jean.
This is one of those pieces where you really don’t need to overthink the rest of the outfit. Let the jacket be the statement.
Try it with: simple tees, tanks, jeans, loafers, ballet flats, or sneakers.
3. Anthropologie Faux Fur Jacket
Enter the faux fur jacket.
I love a good faux fur because it makes an outfit feel instantly more special, even when you’re wearing something incredibly simple underneath. And a leopard print is especially easy to style because it acts almost like a neutral.
Here, we kept the rest of the outfit really simple and let the jacket be the star.
You can also dress this kind of jacket up with a skirt or dress, or make it more casual with jeans and flats.
Try it with: jeans, simple sweaters, black pants, dresses, ballet flats, or heels.
4. Walmart Leather/Suede Jacket
If there’s one texture that immediately makes an outfit feel like fall, it’s suede.
A brown or taupe suede jacket is one of those pieces that looks incredibly expensive and polished without being overly dressy.
I love this one with a simple white top and jeans because it lets the texture of the jacket do all the work.
And unlike some trendier jacket styles, a suede jacket is something you’ll be able to pull out year after year. It works with basically every fall color palette, too.
Try it with: white tees, cream sweaters, denim, black pants, loafers, boots, or sneakers.
5. Target Plaid Jacket
Plaid and fall just belong together.
But instead of a traditional plaid flannel, try a more structured plaid jacket.
This one has a slightly boxier shape, a funnel neckline, and oversized pockets, which gives it more of a jacket feel than a shirt. That means it can be the main layer of your outfit rather than just another piece underneath a coat.
I love this with simple denim because the plaid already gives you plenty of visual interest.
Try it with: straight-leg jeans, wide-leg jeans, a simple tee, boots, loafers, or a baseball cap for a more casual look.
6. Anthropologie Bomber Jacket
The bomber jacket is one of my favorite ways to make a casual outfit feel a little cooler.
I especially love a bomber in a rich fall color like burgundy.
The slightly oversized shape and gathered waistband give it that classic bomber feel, but the deeper color makes it feel much more elevated than your basic sporty jacket.
And this is another great example of how a jacket can completely change an outfit. Put it over a simple tee and jeans and you’re done.
Try it with: denim, trousers, simple tees, sweaters, sneakers, loafers, or boots.
7. Walmart Navy Jacket
If olive utility jackets aren’t your thing, try navy.
A navy utility jacket gives you all the casual functionality of an olive jacket, but feels a little cleaner and more classic.
I love the oversized collar and pocket details on this one. It has enough personality that you can wear it over a very simple outfit without it feeling boring.
Navy also works beautifully with denim, cream, burgundy, brown, and basically every other color you naturally gravitate toward in the fall.
Try it with: cream tops, denim, striped sweaters, black pants, sneakers, loafers, or boots.
8. Walmart Floral Bomber
And if you love a good statement piece, a printed bomber is SO good.
This is another jacket where you can keep the rest of your outfit really simple.
A floral print might sound difficult to style, but I actually think these jackets are surprisingly versatile. Pick one with a darker background and colors that already exist in your wardrobe, and it becomes much easier to wear.
I paired this one with a simple cream tank and jeans, and that’s really all it needs.
Try it with: denim, black pants, a simple tank, white tee, loafers, ballet flats, or sneakers.
9. Quince Waterproof Jacket
You also need that easy jacket you can throw on without thinking.
This is the jacket for those in-between fall days when it’s too chilly for a tee but nowhere near cold enough for a real coat.
Look for something lightweight with a slightly structured shape. A neutral color like taupe makes it especially easy to wear with denim and other fall basics.
I love this kind of jacket for everyday life because it doesn’t feel overly styled. It’s just an easy layer that makes your outfit look finished. What I really love about it is the hood hides in the funnel neck!
Try it with: jeans, tees, tanks, sneakers, loafers, or casual dresses.
10. Quince Classic Wrap Coat
Finally, you need one more polished option: a classic coat.
This is the piece I reach for when I want my outfit to feel a little more elevated.
A wrap-style coat with a belt is especially flattering because you can define your waist, but it still feels relaxed and easy to wear.
And don’t save a coat like this only for dressy outfits. I love it with jeans, too. Throw it over a simple black top and denim and suddenly you look very put together with basically zero effort.
Try it with: jeans, trousers, dresses, boots, loafers, or heels.
How to Choose the Right Fall Jackets
If you’re looking at this list thinking, “Okay, Merrick, but do I actually need 10 jackets?”
No. Absolutely not.
Instead, think about what gaps you have in your wardrobe.
If your wardrobe is mostly casual:
Start with a utility jacket, lightweight jacket, and bomber.
If you want more elevated options:
Look for a suede jacket, printed jacket, and classic coat.
If you love statement pieces:
Try a faux fur or printed bomber.
If you live somewhere with mild fall weather:
Focus on lightweight and cropped jackets that you can layer.
If you have a cold fall and winter:
Look for heavier suede, faux fur, wool, and lined jackets that can actually keep you warm.
The goal isn’t to collect every jacket trend. It’s to have a few different silhouettes that can completely change the feel of the outfits you already own.
How to Make Your Fall Jackets Work Harder
One of my favorite styling tricks is to use your jacket as the statement piece instead of trying to make every part of your outfit interesting.
Start with something incredibly simple:
Jeans + basic top + jacket.
That’s it.
A printed jacket adds interest.
A suede jacket adds texture.
A bomber adds a little edge.
A utility jacket adds casual structure.
A faux fur jacket makes the whole thing feel fun.
A classic coat makes it feel polished.
This is also why I love having several different jacket silhouettes in my closet. You can wear the exact same jeans and top underneath and create completely different outfits just by changing the jacket.
My Fall Jacket Formula
If you want to keep it really simple, here’s the formula I’d use:
ONE everyday jacket
Think utility or lightweight jacket.
ONE elevated jacket
Think suede or a polished neutral.
ONE statement jacket
Think faux fur, floral, plaid, or another fun print.
ONE casual/cool jacket
Think bomber.
ONE polished coat
Something you can throw over jeans or dresses.
That’s a really solid fall outerwear wardrobe without having to fill your closet with jackets you only wear once.
Final Thoughts
Fall jackets are one of my favorite ways to make getting dressed feel more interesting.
You don’t need a completely new wardrobe every season. Sometimes you just need one really good jacket to make the clothes you already own feel fresh again.
So before you go shopping for a whole new fall wardrobe, take a look at your jackets first. See what you already have, figure out which category you’re missing, and then shop intentionally.
Because the best fall jacket is the one you’ll actually reach for over and over again.
