A few months ago, I saw Sarah of Whoorl post a recipe for her “Whoorlie” green smoothie. I’ve been a green smoothie fan for over a year, but I had my own little made-up recipe that I liked to use, so I didn’t really think twice about her recipe.

Then when I got pregnant, and was suddenly having horrible and relentless breakouts, I was frantically searching for anything that would naturally help a pregnant girl out. Then, Sarah tweeted about her Babble article on healthy skin, which mentioned the Whoorlie Smoothie, and I was sold.

After trying it a few times, I made a few adjustments, because sorry…I cannot drink something for breakfast that tastes (and looks) like pond scum. The romaine lettuce just made it too “green” tasting, and gave it a mealy texture. Even for beautiful glowing skin, I could not stomach it — Sarah is a stronger woman than I am.

A few minor alterations, and now it’s delicious, doesn’t taste too green, has a good texture, and is still chock full of healthy nutrients.

The Green Smoothie (adapted from Whoorl)

1/2 an apple (I use pink lady or gala)
1/2 an orange
1 banana (slightly ripe is better)
2 large handfuls of spinach (I freeze my spinach to keep it from going bad so quickly)
7 or 8 ice cubes
unsweetened original almond milk (about 1/2 cup — more if you want it thinner)
4-5 pieces of frozen fruit (we usually do strawberries, peaches, mangos, or pineapple)

Directions: Put all the ingredients in the blender (in this order), and blend until very smooth. Add water until your desired consistency is reached (I usually do about 1/2 a cup). Serve immediately. (makes roughly 3 cups)

For the last few weeks, I have had this (and my wheat toast with raspberry jam) every morning for breakfast, and LOVE it. It makes enough for two full glasses, so I have one for breakfast and one with my lunch.

Also, Peanut loves it too. With his anti-food stage that he’s been going through the past few weeks, I’m thrilled for him to get lots of good fruits and veggies in his system every day.

Oh, and because I’m sure you’re all wondering, I have seen an improvement in my skin. I’m still battling occasional breakouts with my raging pregnancy hormones, but the difference between now and five weeks ago is huge.

It also probably helps that I’m following some of Sarah’s other advice and exercising consistently, taking a Biotin supplement (which is also making my nails stronger and my hair grow faster!), and drinking tons of water. But still…make the smoothie. You’ll thank me.

ooooh thanks for posting this — I feel like I'm 16 again lately with my gross skin. Going to give this a try!!

  2. This is great! I am 17 weeks pregnant and eating anything green makes me sick 🙁 This might help me and my little bug to have some good nutrition! Thanks!

I add a little kale to my smoothies. Bart hates kale when it's cooked, but he doesn't mind it in a smoothie. I only use one or two leaves of it, so it's not as green as yours.

I don't know that my blender could handle a whole apple, though.

Glenn and I have been juicing lately to start our day too! We do green apples, kale, spinach and carrots mostly and seriously I have never eaten so healthy in all my life : ) and I really do like how it tastes! I am glad you found something natural that helps! I think it really does make your day start better

I need to make this or get back to juicing. I've been taking Biotin (finally my nails aren't breaking!), exercising regularly, and using apple cider vinegar toner (my skin isn't oily!) but I started breaking out like crazy a couple of weeks ago! What is going on?!?!

Yum! This is just a little bit different than the green smoothie I've been making and I think I'll try this variation soon. I'm a total green smoothie convert. They're yummy and so filling.

ooh I really should try this. My skin has never been great and I've always got breakouts on my chin. Nothing seems to help. This might!

  9. How funny! I just did a post on juicing today 🙂 I agree- some taste like straight dirt! I'll have to try this soon!

I am making this tomorrow. As early as possible. My pregnancy nausea is still pretty extreme, but smoothies have been my saving grace–I'm lobbing some spinach in there tomorrow!

And isn't chia seed seriously the best thing in the world?

  11. talk to your baby doc about your skin. My doc prescribed me cClindamycin when i was like 20 weeks along. It is a topical cream you just put on your problem areas at night. It has done wonders and I will most likely be on it for the rest of my life! Because my skin hasn't been this clear for this long since like prepuberty!
