One of my favorite things about a new year is setting new goals. It’s even more fun to go through my goals from the previous year and see what I accomplished, see what I could have done better on, and see in which areas I totally failed.

Here are a couple of my favorites for this year:

  • Run a 5K using the couch to 5K program (I’m really bad at running more than about a block, you guys, so this is big for me. Also, scary).
  • Limit myself to two desserts per week (my sister and I are doing this together — so happy to have someone to keep me accountable!)
  • Keep a journal (I’m using this beauty, which is so much less daunting than a regular journal)
  • Become a better seamstress — really work on making things look professional. No cutting corners.
  • Be a happier, more present, and more fun mom.

Any new years resolutions for you?

Longtime lurker, but I saw you mentioned the Couch to 5K program, and had to pipe up! I started Couch to 5k in December, when my second turned six weeks. I'm veryvery overweight, and had this epiphany that I need to take care of myself all the time, not just when I'm pregnant. I was capable of walking two miles at a time, so I honestly thought it wasn't going to be too bad. The first three workouts are jog 60 seconds, walk 90 seconds, repeat for 20 minutes. I won't lie, the first workout was ridiculously hard. Every time I've gone, it's gotten easier. I still sweat and wheeze, but I'm going farther every time. Trust me, you can do it!

  2. Great goals! I started running 3 years ago using the Couch to 5k program and I have run 2 half marathons and trained for a 3rd at this point. You go girl.

  3. I have some friends who loved the Couch to 5K! You get it Merrick! I made zero resolutions. I'm terrible about breaking them, soooooooooooooo their is prob not point. 😉

OH I have that same journal, but have yet to use it since my kid doesn't really talk in sentences yet…I'll get something funny here and there, but not enough to start the book and write something in it everyday. And you can do it! I am NOT a runner AT ALL, had trouble running just like you and I finished my first (and probably last, haha) 1/2 marathon in Sept. YOU CAN DO IT! 🙂

I'm also doing the C25K program – I started in December and am loving it so far. I grew up with awful asthma so learning how to run is a big deal for me – can't wait to hear how it goes for you!!

And I love this vest!! Super cute outfit!!

  6. I love my Line a Day journal. I started it last January, so it's been really exciting to see what I was up to on this day last year! And you can do the running thing, just keep at it-it's amazing what your body can do.

I just heard about those journals last week! Do you have to start in January (that is, are they dated?)?

And, there is an app (I'll have to look it up) that you can do with C25K where you can listen to your own music/book/podcast and then there is a voice over that just tells you "now run" or "now walk" or whatever. Much better than then listening to the same lame music every time (or trying to watch the clock while you run).

And I am SO happy you're doing 2 desserts with me. Makes it way easier for me.

AND this is the longest comment ever.

I love this vest!! Great goals, too. I want to run another 5k this year, and be better about my journal.

Love your blog, and wanted to chime in about the Couch to 5k thing. I started with very little endurance, I never thought I would be able to run, even for a mile! Finished my first 5k in September and have signed up for 2 this spring. The app is really helpful as well, I highly recommend it! Good luck, and happy running!

  10. Great Goals Merrick! I am also trying to limit my dessert consumption. We only eat desserts on the weekends at our house. Keep up the great work.

I started a daily one line journal this year too. I'm trying to focus on and appreciate the little things, my "happiness a day".

  13. i love those journals. i have the 5 year journal which asks a specific question and i'm on the second year. way easier than a book full of blank pages 🙂

  14. Lindsay says:

I plan to read at least 12 books this year — and I also want to get in shape and start working out more. I think reading will be MUCH easier for me to achieve. 🙂

  15. Merrick, this past fall I ran a 5k. None of my friends believed me when I said I was going to, because I'm the TOTAL OPPOSITE of a runner. But, I did it with some friends and it was SO much fun! Also, I can say I ran a real race now 🙂 I did the Warrior Dash, and it was a total ball. I highly recommend looking into the Warrior Dash. Anybody can do it!! xoxo

  18. Long time lurker as well…. My resolutions are to do at least one charitable act a month. Changing the world one month at a time! And to be a more present, more patient mom. 🙂

    4. Be aware of what I eat.
    5. Stay stress free and enjoy what I'm doing – if I don't, learn to love it while being stress free or drop it.
