Which prints are actually classic fashion prints that will stand the test of time? Let me show you five that won’t go out of style anytime soon.

These are 5 classic fashion prints that won’t go out of style

Right now, leopard print is the year’s biggest print in fashion. Lots of you have asked me if this is a print that’s worth trying, or if it’s a fleeting trend that soon fade away. Here’s the short answer — it’s a very classic print!

Here’s the longer answer. I went to the traveling Dior exhibit last year in downtown Dallas last year, and while looking through Christian Dior’s fashion sketches from the 1930s, I saw a gorgeous leopard print fabric swatch that was identical to many of the leopard prints I see in stores now.

So yes, leopard print isn’t a fleeting trend. Here are five prints that will stand the test of time:

  1. Leopard
  2. Stripes
  3. Plaid
  4. Floral
  5. Polka Dots

Not all pieces in these classic prints will be in style forever

Remember, not every item with a classic print is actually a classic item.

You might have a pair of leopard print CROCS shoes (I don’t know if they even make those… oh! I just checked, and they do, ha!). CROCS will not be in style forever, even though they’re having a moment with teens right now, so if you want to add these classic prints to your closet, choose them in classic styles!

An item isn’t classic just because it’s made in a classic print!

Here are some examples of all five classic prints

1. Leopard print

Leopard prints come in all varieties right now, some more modern, some more classic. I recommend choosing the classic ones (most similar to an actual leopard), like the two below, if you want something that will stand the test of time.

2. Stripes

The most classic striped options are navy and white, and black and white. But also other colors mixed with white (like light blue, red, yellow, pink, and orange) can be very classic.

Also uniform stripes are the most classic, where the spacing of stripes is equal.

Two colors mixed together, or stripes with a variety of sizes of stripes within one print will feel the most trendy.

3. Plaid

This includes classic plaid, gingham, and check. You basically can’t go wrong with any plaid. They’re all pretty dang classic!

4. Floral

Floral prints are tricky, because floral trends are constantly changing. But you can’t go wrong with medium size flowers printed on a dress or a skirt or a top.

Tiny floral prints can easily feel “little house on the prairie,” and large floral prints can very easily overpower any woman’s frame. So somewhere in the middle is going to be the most classic option.

As we head into fall and you’re maybe adding a few new things to your wardrobe, these classic prints will definitely be a good choice. Just remember to choose classic styles that will last for years!

So true! Those are classic design styles that will always be in style and looks fine on any figure.

I agree with most of this, I’m all about classic. When I REMODELed I didn’t want me kitchen to get stuck in a certain year/trend. I will say the only people I see wear Leopard are fashion bloggers, and it’s not my style at all. I’m surprised how many leopard pieces each of them has! So I agree with all but that one! I think it comes and goes.

How funny! Leopard is definitely having a bigger moment than in the past, but my point in telling the story about the Dior show is that it will definitely be around long term even if some years it’s more or less “trendy.” Also if it’s not your style, that’s ok! You stick to the things that work best for you and make you feel amazing.

Also great choice on a classic kitchen. There are lots of choices right now that will definitely look dated in 5-10 years, even though they look really cool right now.

These are the only prints I have in my closet right now! I love classic style, though, and am happy to be building a wardrobe that will stand the test of time. Love what you said about the colorful and uneven stripes looking more trendy! I’ve never been able to put my finger on it but simple, uniform b&w stripes have always been my go-to.
