I try not to make blanket statements about something that everyone must own, because everyone has different styles and lifestyles.
But that being said, I think everyone needs a WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRT in their closet.
It’s one of those pieces that is classic, chic, simple, understated, and can work for basically any and every occasion.
Let me show you…
How to wear a white button down shirt casually:
In these photos I wore it pretty casually for spring or summer, with LIGHT WASH JEANS, a STRAW HAT, and a simple pair of FLAT SANDALS. I also rolled up the sleeves for a more relaxed look.
A few similar alternatives:
- pair it with DARK JEANS, DISTRESSED SHORTS, BLACK JEANS, or WHITE JEANS (my current favorite white pair!)
- swap out the straw hat for a BASEBALL CAP or HAIR BANDANA
- change the sandals for SNEAKERS or FLATS
I would wear any of these listed outfits on date night, out with friends, at home with my kids, or on the weekends.
How to dress up a white button down shirt:
If you work in an office that requires professional wear, it’s definitely an essential. It can be tucked into a PENCIL SKIRT (loving this BRIGHT PRINT ONE) or DRESS PANTS.
For church, it’s also a great option. I would totally tuck it into a FEMININE SKIRT. I wore it like this (but added some fun sneakers) at New York Fashion Week last year!
You could even wear it really casually and knot it at your waist over a swimsuit, like I did in THIS POST.
Lots of different possibilities! Are you convinced you need one yet??
I’ve linked everything that I just talked about below in the thumbnails so it’s easy to see and shop!
I recently purchased several shirts for work and in that bunch was a sleeveless, a short sleeved and a long sleeved white shirt.
I think they are super versatile and I definitely need more than three in my wardrobe!
