Last week, Philip had a day off so we packed the kids up in the car and took an impromptu day trip down to San Juan Capistrano (about 40 minutes away). It’s been pretty hot the last few weeks, so I wore a lightweight dress I made last summer. When I posted a picture on my instagram, a few people asked if I had a tutorial and I was sure that I did. But after a little searching, nothing came up.
Well it turns out that I created this dress, and subsequent tutorial, for SheKnows last year when I was regularly contributing to their site, and it was never published. So, surprise! Pictures from a year ago, a tutorial written a year ago, and an illustration drawn a year ago. So no, I didn’t chop or dye my hair — just a nice old picture.
This dress is so, so easy to make, because you start out with a store-bought tee and just add some fabric to the bottom. It’s lightweight and perfect for the rapidly approaching summer. So get your weekend projecting on and make yourself one!
(it could also be so cute in a maxi length!)
Materials Needed:
- basic t-shirt (mine is this one from H&M)
- one yard of 60″ wide fabric (mine is a lightweight polyester from girl charlee (sadly no longer available))
- 1/4″ wide elastic (enough to go around your natural waistline once)
- matching thread
Follow the step by step instructions below that correspond to the illustration.
- Start with a basic t-shirt and roughly one yard of 60″ wide fabric (I only needed 25″ for the length — you’ll need more or less depending on your desired length).
- Fold the fabric in half (right sides of the fabric together), matching up the short ends, as shown. Sew along the short sides, creating a tube of fabric.
- Measure your natural waist (or wherever you want the waist of the dress to sit) and cut a piece of elastic that length. Sew the ends together to make an elastic circle.
- Stretch the elastic and place it over the tube of fabric, and then sew it on to the very top of the fabric tube with a straight stitch, as shown. Make sure you stretch the fabric as you sew so that it reaches around the entire tube of fabric. When you stop stretching it, the fabric will gather.
- Tuck the skirt inside the t-shirt, matching up the end of the t-shirt and the elastic end of the skirt (making sure the right (outside) sides of the fabric are facing each other). Sew over the elastic again, this time stretching it to fit the hem of the t-shirt.
- note: if your t-shirt is long, make sure you crop it a bit before attaching it to the skirt. Getting rid of that extra length before sewing will help the attachment go more smoothly.
- Turn the dress right side out and hem the skirt portion to your desired length. And you’re done!
Enjoy your brand new dress for summer!
It always blows my mind to see all of your DIYs! You’re a pure artistic soul! 🙂

I think you DID do a maxi version of this, because I made it! Did you describe it as a Greek-goddess dress maybe? Anyway, I loved that one so I’m sure I’ll love this shorter one, too. Very cute.
love this skirt!

I blogged all about my favorite places to shop fabric right here: https://www.merricksart.com/2014/05/my-8-favorite-places-to-purchase-fabric.html
Was the skirt part of the dress woven or stretchy? Can’t tell from the description or photos.
it’s a woven. Sorry, forgot to mention that!
That dress is so pretty! I love all the pieces you make!
