The Hunt for the Best White T-shirt

The hunt for the best white t-shirts!

I’m a little late on this post, but so excited to finally share with you the results of the best white t-shirts!

I’ve been loving doing these Merrick Asks posts, and if you missed the last one, you can find it RIGHT HERE. I’ll be doing one each month this year, so follow along on Instagram to hear the next question coming next week!

So I asked you guys on instagram about your favorite white t-shirts, and got tons of great recommendations. Since there were too many to personally try, I instead chose the top recommended FIVE and tried each of those.

READY for the results??!

These are the five brands I tried:

  1. Everlane
  2. Halogen
  3. Madewell
  4. Zyia
  5. Target

Here we go.

Everlane V-Neck Cotton Tee.

Wearing SIZE SMALL.

No suspense or build up here….this t-shirt was the clear winner for me!

I had heard great things about Everlane for years, but hadn’t ever bothered to order anything from them. So I was surprised to get on their site and discover that their shirts are so affordable. This white tee is only $15!

Reasons I love it:

  • It’s not a bit sheer, but it’s still thin and very breathable.
  • The v-neck is the perfect length. Not too low, but low enough to be very flattering.
  • The sleeves are a great length
  • The fabric hangs really nicely and smooths over any lumps or bumps you might have.
  • The fit is just slightly oversized – I’m wearing a size small. Not too big, and perfect for half tucking, tucking into pants, or tucking into a skirt.

The Cons:

  • Everlane doesn’t have free returns.
  • It does shrink a tiny bit in the dryer. Not a ton, but definitely take that into consideration. I’d recommend sizing UP if you want a more oversized fit.

If you’re looking for the perfect white tee, THIS IS IT.

Halogen Jersey V-Neck Tee.

Wearing SIZE X-SMALL

I absolutely adore this tee. It’s the softest of all the tees, with a lot of stretch, and is a loose, oversized fit.

The reason I didn’t choose this one as the winner is because I feel like the fabric is not universally flattering. If you have any weight in your stomach, the fabric will hang on it and cling to it. If you don’t carry any weight in your stomach, this is a really good tee for you.

Reasons I love it:

  • It’s the softest and most comfortable tee of all five.
  • The v-neck is pretty high so it has really good coverage
  • The sleeves are a great length
  • The length of the tee is long, and great for half tucking
  • Free shipping and free returns!

Cons:

  • It’s not quite opaque. I wore a nude colored bra with all of these tees, and I felt like you could still slightly see through it.
  • Also because the fabric is so soft and lightweight, it shows any bumps from bra straps or gaping bra cups.
  • It’s too oversized to tuck into a skirt, in my opinion. It’s definitely a more CASUAL tee, perfect for wearing with shorts or jeans.

Madewell Whisper Tee

Madewell V-Neck Whisper Tee.

Wearing SIZE SMALL

I actually bought this same white tee a couple of years ago, and I bought it in the stripe. So I’m pretty familiar with it, and obviously like it!

Reasons I love it:

  • It’s a super lightweight cotton
  • I love the slub knit, and it definitely helps it be more opaque.
  • I like the little pocket that adds a little bit of personality
  • Great length of sleeves
  • Good fit for jeans or skirts

Cons:

  • The v-neck is the lowest of all the v-necks I tried. For me it’s ok, but I’ve had comments from some that the v-neck is too low for them.
  • The tee I bought a couple of years ago got a tiny hole in the corner of the pocket after a few washes. Bummer!
  • It does get really wrinkly and has to be steamed or pressed after washing no matter what!

Zyia Crewneck Go To Tee
Zyia Crewneck Go To Tee

Zyia White Crew Neck Tee.

Tons of you asked about this one because you’ve been hearing about it and seeing people become reps for Zyia and you wanted me to try it.

So one of my sweet readers, Becky from @MyZyiaGirl sent it to me so I could try it out. She sent me the Go To Tee.

Reasons why I love it:

  • it’s made of a soft, lightweight, breathable material
  • It’s a polyester/spandex blend, so it feels very similar to many of my athletic tops.
  • Great for hot climates because it won’t absorb sweat
  • The curved hemline allows you to fully tuck, or leave untucked completely. [see note in the cons about curved hemline]

Cons:

  • The material doesn’t have the best rebound, so if you stretch it, it stays a little stretched out.
  • The sleeves are a little long for my liking
  • I personally prefer a v or scoop neck, so the crew neck doesn’t feel quite as flattering to me.
  • When half tucked, the curved hem in the back is a little long and can be a little unflattering because it rests in a funky way on my curves in the back. See the above photos. If I half tuck the front, I think I’d need to half tuck the back so it doesn’t accentuate my buns in an unflattering way 😉 I think this is true with all curved hemlines.

Wearing SIZE SMALL

So many of you recommended this tee, and with a price tag of $8, I was excited to try. But it actually ended up being my least favorite of the five I tried.

Reasons why I loved it:

  • It’s opaque
  • The sleeve length is longer, but good — the website shows them rolled, which is cute, but they can also be unrolled for a longer length
  • It’s a great, slim fit for tucking into high waisted jeans, or into an A-line skirt.
  • Can’t beat the price tag of $8!

Cons:

  • The material is not going to work with every body type. It’s soft, but it’s going to hug any weight you might carry around your middle, and accentuate it. It definitely won’t hide or smooth anything.
  • The fit of the tee is too slim to wear untucked, or even half tucked. I would never wear this style with non-high waisted jeans or untucked over jeans. You can see the picture above with it untucked, and it’s very unflattering, showing every lump of my jeans underneath.
  • The length is very long. It’s fine if it’s tucked, but with the slim cut and the long length, there’s no option except to wear it fully tucked.

I have been waiting for this post! Thanks so much for the reviews especially the pros and cons. I just had my 4th baby so weight around the middle is something I will be DEALING with for a few months.

  4. My madewell whisper v-neck got a hole by the pocket almost immediately, too. I was so bummed because madewell is supposed to be such good quality.

Just pulled the trigger on the Everlane top, so wish me luck!

  9. Kelly Inskeep says:

I just received my Everlane order and I am so disappointed. The sizing runs small(and I am a petite 95lbs) and the white tshirt is definitely somewhat sheer..can see the bra right through it. In fact, that’s one of the first things my 13 year-old daughter mentioned when i tried it on. I may try it in the next size up to see if that improves the look but I am concerned about the length. And don’t bother trying their jeans. The second I pulled them on I knew it was going to be bad. My daughter’s repsonse? “Wow. I’ve never seen a pair of jeans look so bad.” Enough said 😉 Time to start the return process.

  10. Emily says:

I’m really DISAPPOINTED about the review. The EVErlane shirt is very sheer. I think you are a a very good stylist, but I don’t think i will shop based on the blog again.

I’ve been looking for reviews on the go 2 tee zyia top. YOur review has been so helpful. I’m trying to decide between that one or the zyia pocket tee.

Also i wanted to ask you…what is the style of those dark wash AMERICAN eagle jeans you’re wearing with the everlane v-neck tee?

  11. Sandra Blackwell says:

I am 61 yr young and I love the everlane tees. I do get a medium but am normally wear a small, the slight shrinkage when dried makes the small just a little too tight for my liking. I don’t find the white too sheer at all, I just wear a nude bra Their box cut tee is also nice, a little wider cut but you can still half tuck..

  12. Katie says:

Just ordered my mom the everlane white tee in two colors for mothers day!!! She was specifically looking for a few nice v-neck tees and I remembered your blog post. Thanks for all the help!

I bought thRee everlane tees based on this post and loved thEm…before i washed them. They wash and dry very badly in my opinion! The Neck and bottom hems suddenly look too sMall for the shirt and/or are Twisted looking. They no longer lay flat Nor look nice at all. Very dIsappointed! Will only wear them as sleep shirts now.

    • Cheryl says:

Not sure why my comment has funky capitalization. On my phone it shows as all caps until i submit.

      • Merrick says:

oh no! i’m so sorry to hear this. Mine come out of the wash looking a little wrinkly, but I steam them and they’re as good as new. have you tried pressing or steaming it to flatten out the neckline and hem?

  14. Zoe Burton says:

Will you share the jeans you’re wearing in the photos? Specifically the jeans with the Everlane tee?
