Holiday Style Guide: Neutral Holiday Outfits

sequins and cable knit sweater

It’s Holiday Style Week! I’ll be sharing great holiday outfits for every occasion. Today, we’re talking about neutral outfits.

Dressing for the holidays is so fun, but you don’t always want to bust out the bright green and red sweaters. Here are some neutral holiday outfits that are centered around neutral colors, with a few fun and festive – but understated – holiday touches.

I also rounded up some neutral holiday shopping options HERE if you’re looking for more subtle or neutral holiday options.

Where to Wear Neutral Holiday Outfits

Here are some great places to wear these neutral holiday outfits:

  • Any semi-casual holiday party
  • Plays and ballets
  • Holiday office party

Neutral Gold and Black

This light gold colored shirt is not a top I’d typically choose for holiday, but when I was thinking about neutral holiday outfits, this top jumped right out at me. The classic button up style in the shimmery champagne color is perfect for an understated holiday look. I paired it with black demi boot cut jeans, but you could dress it up a bit more with a skirt, or make it work appropriate with dress pants.

Which accessories to choose:

  • If we’re keeping things neutral, which we are, let’s keep the jewelry neutral too. You could take advantage of a neutral outfit and go with some bold red bow earrings or earrings shaped like Santa, but I kept this classy and simple with some gold statement earrings. I also chose a neutral shoe, but in a little bit of a unique style with the ankle strap and block heel.

Neutral sequins

Can sequins be neutral? I said neutral, not subtle…wink, wink.

I absolutely adore this outfit. It’s simple but complex, neutral but bold, and just the right amount of winter-y and festive. Sequin skirts are lots of fun, and this silver pencil style is easy to wear in lots of ways. But paired with a cozy cable knit sweater, it just feels so chic. Seriously, try this pairing! It’s super festive while still being neutral.

Which accessories to choose:

  • Since the skirt and sweater are both bold pieces, I skipped any bracelets or necklaces, and just stuck with a pair of oversized stud (faux) diamond earrings. Just for a little sparkle! And then for the shoes, I went with a sparkly pair, but they’re clear so they feel very lightweight in the outfit and don’t make it feel bottom-heavy. I think

Sweater dress

A sweater dress is a great option for a nice holiday winter look. It keeps you warm and also feels cozy and festive.  For a neutral holiday outfit, you could do black or gray or tan, but I chose this gorgeous cream option, cause I wanted to go for a “winter white” feel.

Which accessories to choose:

  • Most sweater dresses are boxy through the waist, so I added a belt for waist definition. I also like the contrast of the structured belt against the soft sweater fabric. I kept the accessories simple and minimal with a stack of gold bangles and gold hoop earrings, and then added a holiday pop with a green hair bow. I love that it stands out from the neutral and monochromatic outfit and helps add a festive feel! For shoes, I went with tan ankle boots to continue the monochromatic feel, but you could dress this look up with nude pumps, or dress it down with simple flats or even nice sneakers.

Pop of plaid

I love plaid in holiday outfits, but sometimes when you’re wearing holiday reds or greens, plaid is just too much to add. It’s like an outfit explosion of Christmas, and sometimes that’s not the vibe we’re going for. But with a very simple, neutral outfit like this tan sweater and black jeans, a plaid scarf adds just the holiday pop you need!

Which accessories to choose:

  • Since the scarf is such a major accessory, you really don’t need much else. I opted for no earrings, but if you did earrings I’d keep them small and simple. I also chose tan ankle boots to balance the tan sweater, but you could also do black boots, flats, heels, or sneakers with this look, depending on how dressy you wanted to go!
