Who out there celebrates Pi Day? It’s a silly little tradition but it’s so fun to have any excuse to make pie. I like to make these mini pies for Pi Day so we can each have the recipe we want!
Our Pi Day tradition is to make these mini pies
Every year on March 14, we celebrate Pi Day (3.14…get it?) Our family tradition is to make pie, but since I don’t usually like to make an entire pie, and everyone likes different flavors, we’ve started making mini pies for Pi Day. It’s fun, easy, and you can eat an entire pie guilt free.
Last year I wrote a post about how I love to celebrate random holidays. I don’t ever do anything crazy, but I think creating a family culture of celebrating and having fun is so important. Making mini pies is a simple and memorable way to do that.
These are our favorite pie recipes for mini pies
1. Triple Berry Pie
I’ve been making THIS BERRY PIE RECIPE for probably five years and it’s always a winner. I usually double the crumble topping and add extra butter, a 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and sometimes oats to make it a little more chunky and delicious. This is always Philip’s request for his mini pie.
2. Vanilla Pear Pie
My sister in law introduced me to THIS VANILLA PEAR PIE RECIPE a few years ago and it’s so amazing. My boys gobble this one up and it makes amazing leftovers (I literally eat it cold out of the fridge the next day with no regrets).
Also, I personally leave out the pecans.
3. Pumpkin Pie with Graham Cracker Crust
I’ve never been a pumpkin pie fan, but my boys requested it a few years ago and I decided to try THIS PUMPKIN PIE RECIPE and pair it with a GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST instead of the traditional crust. WHOA, it was so good. The key is to make the graham cracker crust nice and thick so the proportions of crust to pie filling are like 30/70, rather than a thin crust and mostly filling. And of course you have to top this one with whipped cream.
4. Chicken Pot Pie
It only makes sense to have chicken pot pie for dinner on Pi Day too! This CHICKEN PIE RECIPE is my all time favorite. I sub the sweet potatoes for regular potatoes since my husband doesn’t love sweet potatoes, and I always make them in ramekins so everyone gets their own mini pie. Delish!
How to cut down the recipes to make these into mini pies
It depends on the recipe, of course, but usually to make only one or two mini pies, I make 1/4 of the original recipe.
Then I use THESE MINI PIE TINS (or you can use THESE DISPOSABLE ONES) to bake them. The baking time is usually about 1/2 of the time, but watch them carefully!
Pi Day is this coming Saturday, so go grab your ingredients and turn a regular Saturday evening it a fun family celebration!
