Now that I’m past the artistic frustrations I was dealing with, I’m diving full force into an artistic mindset.
In December, my school has arranged for 10 students to have their best class work in a show in Salt Lake City’s Meyer Gallery — a very prestigious and renowned Utah gallery. Obviously this a huge opportunity, and obviously I want to be one of the 10 students, so I’ve committed myself to work harder than ever and be producing amazing work by December.
One of the ways I’m planning on getting myself in an artist mindset is to surround myself with art, all the time. Usually when I’m up late painting, I’ll turn on the TV and watch Jon and Kate Plus 8 or the news, just for noise or something to keep me awake. But now I’ve decided to listen to books on CD about artists lives, or art in general. Or watch documentaries and videos about art history. If I’m constantly surrounded by good and interesting art, I feel like my inspiration and motivation level will skyrocket. And I can’t wait for that!
The only problem is that I don’t even know where to start to find books on CD or movies that I can check out from the library or buy cheaply.
Any suggestions in helping me fulfill my lifelong dream?
That last part was just to guilt trip you into commenting.
You are very lucky to have a librarian sister. . .
Go to your library catalog and click the Advanced tab (it's the middle one toward the top).
Then put "art" in the "Subject Keyword" form and then select "Video -DVD & VHS" in the limits box below and push go.
Just that brings up 80 movies about art that your library has. Easy!
I'd recommend reading Walking on Water, by Madeleine L'Engle. It's her reflections on the relationship between faith and art, and what really constitutes "religious" art. It can be a little out there at times, but it's thought-provoking.
Good luck on your new work!
My dad (step) may have some stuff that'd be helpful.
Good luck! Let us know how it all turns out.
