I go through phases with scarves. I wear them all the time, and then I go for months and months without wearing them. This year has definitely been a year of scarves for me — I wore neck scarves all summer long here, infinity scarves in the fall here, and now that we’re in the middle of winter (and we’re actually getting a real California winter over here!), blanket scarves are in my regular rotation.

My best friend gave me this scarf for Christmas, and its neutral colors make it so easy to style. It sold out so quickly, but I was excited to see an identical one pop up here for only $10 (and free shipping)!

I’ve had a lot of questions about how to tie these scarves, since they are big and sometimes bulky. It’s so easy — check out my step by step instructions below!

  1. Fold your scarf in half so it’s a triangle.
  2. Grab the scarf on either side, about halfway between the ends and the middle.
  3. Cross the two ends behind your neck
  4. Then drape the two end around the front. You can either tuck them underneath the main part, leave them hanging on either side, or tie the ends together underneath  so it stays in place.

note: this works best for square shaped blanket scarves. But for rectangular blanket scarves, you can still follow the same steps — just skip step 1. If the scarf is long, leave the ends hanging long, or knot them underneath in step 4. If the scarf is shorter, tie the ends underneath in step 4 because the ends of the scarf will be squared off instead of pointed, so it will look bulky if they’re not tied and tucked under.

Try wearing a blanket scarf to dress up a basic tee on slightly warmer days, over a sweater, or layered with a coat or jacket. It instantly adds some texture and dimension to your outfit, plus it keeps you nice and toasty warm!

I’ve rounded up some of my favorite blanket scarves in the widget below — I think almost all of them is under $30!
