Athleisure has been a huge trend in the last year, and as a mom of little boys, I love this trend. Anytime it’s socially acceptable to go out of the house wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt, I feel good about that.

I’ve talked about this a few times on the blog, but the key to wearing this trend is to make your outfit feel purposeful in some way so it doesn’t look like you just rolled out of bed.

Here are a few ideas that I’m trying:

  1. Pick the right shoes. Don’t wear flip flops, or slippers (obviously) when you’re rocking athleisure. Choose a pair of athletic sneakers if you want a more sporty look, or a pair of casual everyday sneakers for a more casual, momiform look. I also love a great pair of pumps with joggers, but that’s more appropriate for date night or a girls night. For every day I stick to sneaks.
  2. Add a non-casual piece. Since joggers are basically pajamas, you want to make sure your look doesn’t just look like pj’s. So add a non-casual piece, like a nice suede jacket, a leather jacket, a pair of nice shoes, or a handbag. All of these will instantly make your outfit feel appropriate for everyday.
  3. Do your hair and makeup. You can totally do a messy bun or topknot or ponytail, but make it feel like a purposeful hairstyle. Put on a little makeup — complete your look. Remember, the goal is to not look like you just rolled out of bed, or just got home from the gym!

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite suede jackets in the widget below, and if you follow me on Instagram you’ll see that I’ve worn this jacket about a thousand different ways in the last few weeks, both dressed up and dressed down!

It’s the “it” jacket for spring and it’s perfect. Shop my favorites below!

Very cute!! I have a “How To Style It” request for ya – Maxi length skirts and dresses in the fall/winter. I LOVE maxis in the summer, but I always feel super awkward wearing them with closed toe shoes. Maybe it is just me? You make everything seem so approachable – love your tips!

Love this! I have been dying for a pair of joggers. My question is, how would you style them when its too warm to wear a jacket without looking too casual? (live in AZ!)

    • merrickwhite says:

Wear them with a less pajama-style top. Maybe a striped tee, or a button up shirt, or a simple and casual short sleeved blouse. Then you could do some cute sandals (no flip flops!) and you’re good to go!

I love these sunglasses and am going to order them, but your link goes to the navy ones. Are yours really navy, or did you get the black? Thanks!
