When I started sewing a few years ago, tailoring was one of the first things I taught myself to do. So many of the clothes I purchase often need just one little fix here or there, so knowing how to take clothes in or hem something is so incredibly helpful, and are easy fixes that will save you a trip to the tailor and a few bucks.
I’m sharing how to tailor a structured shirt, a shift dress, and a pair of pants over on SheKnows this month — hop over and check them out!

Do you have recommendations on what sewing machines to buy? I remember my moms old sewing machine had difficulty getting through Jean hems.

I always feel like you can tell when I tailor something myself, I am so picky! Hah!

I totally know what you mean. When I first started tailoring, I felt like you could tell. Although I only have myself to blame because I’m a total corner cutter. But after some practice (and using a serger to finish the edges so they look professional), I don’t think you can tell at all anymore!

Thanks for these tutorials!!! I have some jeans and shirts in a basket, waiting to be tailored for close to a year. Maybe I’ll actually do them now that I have guidance!

  5. Oh my goodness, thank you for this!! I very hard-to-fit so I have gradually been altering my clothes. And now I find that whenever I buy something I want to alter it so it fits me. Especially because I am very picky about how my clothing fits!

    Thanks a million!

Yay! I just got a plaid shirt I had to size up for so I could move my arms in it. Yesterday, I was just thinking about altering it so it’s not so boxy on me.

  7. Oh friend…what I REALLY need is a tutorial on how to use a sewing machine. 😛

You’ve only been sewing for a few years?? There’s hope for me!!! 😉 What projects/things did you do to help you out when you were first learning?

    • Merrick says:

I took three years of sewing lessons when I was 11, but didn’t pick it up again until about 4 years ago. So yes, there’s hope!! 😉

I did a lot of refashioning at the beginning, which was helpful so I got a feel for sewing without having to make something completely from scratch. Try that — it will definitely help!

This is golden! I’ve been wanting to learn how to do this! Especially since I’m smaller, and a lot of the times the smallest sizes at Old Navy and Target are still too big, knowing how to take things in would be so helpful!

Ugh…you make it look easy. If your husband is ever transferred to southern Louisiana, you have a new best friend/student.

I love you for posting this. I never find clothing that fits because I can’t fit my boobs into a small shirt, which is what I would wear, but always end up buying large or extra large… same with pants. I wear a size 6, but I have had 3 kids, so I have hips. Maybe now I can make my clothes actually fit!
