Before I became a mom, there were a lot of things that I expected to happen once I had a baby. For example, I expected to change a lot of diapers. I expected to get less sleep for a while. And I expected to get puked on (although with a baby with acid reflux, my worst nightmares could not have prepared me for the amount of puke that I had to deal with).

But one thing that I did not anticipate was how much I would be on my knees. Since becoming an adult, I’m not sure I’d walked on my knees or crawled around more than ten times ever. Now I do it at least ten times daily, between horsey rides, cleaning up toys before naptime (it’s much too strenuous to do it standing up and have to bend over), and chasing a little boy around the kitchen island.

Several pairs of my pants now have holes in the knees, and most of the others are faded and worn. Now I’m fearing for the life of my precious new blue gap pants (which are thin and delicate to begin with). If they were a shirt, I could just sew on some darling elbow patches. But somehow I think those patches wouldn’t look quite as adorable on my knees. It’s just a hunch.

Love the scarf tucked in! Great look!

Perhaps it's time for in-house wearing of knee protectors, like the ones construction people wear 😉

  3. Maybe you'd better just try and be more like me and embrace the sweatpants! 🙂

I remember those days, so much fun playing on the floor with your little ones. Mine are all taller than me now!
I love the stripes with the leopard, too cute!

    hmm. I guess I'm a bad mom since I don't have this problem … or maybe I'm ALWAYS wearing leggings/sweats/not jeans …

I wonder if you could preemptively reinforce the knees with patches underneath?

love the outfit of course … those jeans look awesome … and super comfy!!

  6. Rachel says:

Oh my gosh! I feel the exact same way. I'll cross my fingers that your jeans survive because I love them!

  7. I'm crossing my fingers for these jeans because they look amazing on you! I love the scarf tucked in and how you tied your belt! My son had acid reflux as well. It was terrible. It ruined my clothes and his and he was so miserable. Glad those days are over!

I was JUST this week thinking I need to stop wearing my beloved gray skinnies so much just around the house because the knees are getting perilously thin. Cue tears.

  9. AGREED!! They need to make some reinforced knees on pants for moms- seriously! An unexpected trial of motherhood! 🙂

  10. Love this look on you! You need to save these pants (and all your others). Good pants are hard to find. Maybe you'll have to resort to wearing volleyball knee pads all day long to preserve your pants. 😉

Ooo, I love this look! A lot!

I like how you also belted your scarf, it looks very pretty. hmm maybe you can make knee patches a new trend 🙂

  13. Packrat says:

Merrick, why not? Start a new trend. Use suede-like fabric, corduroy, or some fun plaids. If you don't want to wear the pants in public, patch the knees and wear them around home. Another way of thrifting.

History: Pants with patched knees were common even when I was in college. Little boys pants were purchased with double knees. When my husband worked in the woods, patches were put on new pants. Also, elbow patches have been in and out of style many times.

PS: You look really cute. I like this ensemble.

  15. Jenn says:

First off I love the patterned scarf and stripes together. And the belt cinches in your waist so perfectly! You never know if that will be the new trend, knee patches, lol!

  16. So I'm in love with this whole entire outfit. I think I must pin it. The stripes, the dark brown, the print on the scarf. Fantastic!
