In the last seven months, I’ve started taking much better care of myself. I’ve started getting a full seven hours of sleep every night, I eat much healthier, and I exercise five to six times a week. After a few months of regularly doing these things, I realized how much it affected the rest of my life. I have a clearer head, I’m happier, I’m more motivated and productive, and my life just feels so much better.

I spent a lot of years floundering around and never able to stick to anything, and letting bad habits affect the rest of my lifestyle. So I’m trying to proactively teach my kids how important healthy habits are, and how we can easily build them into our everyday life to have a happier and healthier lifestyle.

So today we’ve teamed up with Rack Room Shoes to share their Athleisure line of kids and adult shoes that make it easy and affordable to help your kids live a healthy and active lifestyle, and also share a few things we’re doing to develop and maintain healthy habits in our family.

Rack Room Shoes sent us a few new pairs of shoes from their Athleisure line and they’re perfect shoes that give my boys support for playing basketball and soccer, but also keep their feet comfy at school, or let them play at the park or in the backyard.  They have a huge selection of name brand shoes like Nike, Adidas, Puma, and more, and they’re always amazing prices.

Fos wears THESE gray Nike’s every day.

B wears THESE black Adidas every day too!

Here are a few ways we’re making it easy for our kids to develop healthy habits and fit them into our everyday.

  1. Make it a family affair. All kids want to be just like their parents, so seeing their parents making and keeping good habits is the best way to teach them. We try to make it fun, like a family Turkey Trot at Thanksgiving, nights at the park where we play catch, basketball, and soccer, or dance parties in the kitchen after dinner to burn off some energy before bed.
  2. Make healthy habits easy. Keep healthy snacks in the house. Sign them up for a sport. Put their vitamins in their lunchbox so they’ll remember to eat them. Set aside time each day for quiet time so they can learn to be still and rest. These are all little things that will make a big difference.
  3. Be their biggest cheerleader. Kids need and love praise. Kids also can easily get frustrated and tired and bored. I’m certainly not a child development expert, but helping them develop the habit of sticking with something long enough to see progress and improvement is so good for their self esteem and attitude. You can help them as a parent by continually offering support and encouragement, and reminding them that they’re doing hard things and that’s amazing! My oldest is a total perfectionist and if it’s not perfect he gets down on himself, so we’re constantly reminding him that the best things in life take effort and consistent hard work, and every time he tries again, he’s getting better and stronger.
  4. Approach it in their language. At my boy’s ages, I’m really careful to talk about healthy habits and choices in a way that is age appropriate for them. We talk about about how going outside and exercising makes us feel happy and helps us grow big and strong; we don’t talk about losing/gaining weight or changing our body. We talk about how candy and treats makes it harder to focus or gives us a tummy ache; not about calories or fat. I really want them to pay attention to how they feel and act, and not even think about body image compared to anyone else. It’s a struggle with our generation, so approach it carefully!
  5. Let them be kids. Really, the most important thing for me is that my kids have a happy and healthy childhood, and that they’re also able to just be kids. It’s important to have balance — to eat oatmeal or eggs for breakfast some days, and also have donuts for breakfast sometimes!

Mostly I want to be a good mom to my kids and have a happy life with them. And for me, that starts with healthy and good choice for myself, and passing that desire down to them.

  1. I LOVE this post! I admit I’m a bit envious, as some of my children are older and have their faces in a screen so much of the darn time, but I remember doing these very things with them when they were small- I hope those messages got hardwired in there somewhere and will serve them well as they branch out on their own. At least I’ve got my youngest two to stay active with me, ha! 🙂 And I will have to check out this website for new sneaks…thanks!

Oh I’m sure they did get across! We all go through those teenage years when we don’t want to listen to our parents 😉 You’re doing a great job, mama!

Very good options, thank you. Now I also try every day to be a conscientious parent and improve my parenting skills. I would like to give them the best, which is why it is important to do more work with yourself. I read a post not so long ago https://www.mallorcasoul.com/nl/conscious-parenting-how-about-becoming-a-conscious-parent/ written by coach Katja which covers this topic well

I’m fostering healthy and happy habits in my boys by encouraging balanced diets, regular exercise, and positive routines. We prioritize skilled nursing in Torrance family meals, outdoor activities, and open communication about emotions. By setting a good example and creating a supportive environment, I’m helping them build strong physical and mental health practices that will benefit them for years to come.

Good tips, thank you! It is really important to constantly monitor your children’s health and have medical checkups to better control their condition and growth. I read a post about child health checkup importance https://alldaymedicalcare.com/back-to-school-health-checks-for-kids/ where they emphasized the importance of this
