1. Black leather jacket

A black leather jacket is an absolute classic staple for the fall and winter. Some years brands add hoods, sometimes they’re more of a bomber or a biker style, sometimes they’re oversized or cropped, but in general they never go out of style.

  • WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLASSIC LEATHER JACKET: Look for one that fits you well in the shoulders and isn’t overly cropped or long. It should also fit well in the sleeves — roomy enough to wear a sweater underneath, and fitted enough to not be baggy. If you choose one that fits you well, it’ll stand the test of time! Also, black is a classic color that won’t go out of style. Brown and tan and olive green and maroon are colors that pop up, but black is a great classic option you’ll wear for years. I’ve had mine for 10 years and still pull it out every year and it’s as good as ever.

2. Striped tee

Hello, stripes are the most classic thing out there. They’ve been around for ages, and give that effortless, chic look. A classic striped tee, whether in a long or short sleeve, tee or blouse, is a classic option.

  • WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLASSIC STRIPED TEE: Choose something with a breton stripe (white stripe is wider, dark stripe is narrower) or a pin stripe…both are most classic and versatile. Avoid the super wide, chunky stripes, since those are more trendy.

3. Tan ankle boot

If you’re looking for a good ankle boot that can be easily dressed up and down and is super versatile, a tan ankle boot is top of the list. I love a black boot (you guys know…the Chelsea Boot is my ultimate), but a tan ankle boot is a closet must and will be in style forever.

  • WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLASSIC TAN BOOT: There are four important things to look for in a tan ankle boot — height of shaft, width of shaft, heel, and toe shape. The most versatile height is just above your ankle bone. You want it to hit at the narrowest part of your ankle so you don’t get the “cankles” look. But lower than the ankle bone can make your feet look blocky. The width of the boot shaft should hug your ankles as much as possible. The wider the shaft, the more “cankle” look you get. You can choose the height of the heel, but a block heel is most versatile for dressing up and down. And for the toe, choose something that’s almond shape. A pointed or rounded toe is trendy, so somewhere in between is most classic.

4. Dark wash jeans

We’re seeing lots of new styles of jeans over the last year or two, but regardless of what style or rise you choose, a dark wash is the most classic and versatile.

  • WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A CLASSIC PAIR OF DARK WASH JEANS: The fit is the most important thing. I have a video here about what to look when buying a pair of jeans and it’s super helpful. Avoid whiskering (those lighter stripes across the front), and too much (if any) distressing. These will be the most classic options that you can wear for years, regardless of their style.

I hope this is helpful as you build a wardrobe of pieces that will last and be versatile. Keep your eyes open for part 2!
