Almost ten years ago, Philip and I went to Miami for the first time. I’d never experienced a city quite like it — the energy, history, architecture, and vibrancy were intoxicating, and we instantly fell in love with it. We talked about going back lots of times, and finally decided to make it happen this month, and this time take the boys with us.

When hurricane Irma hit just a week before our trip, we planned to cancel, and we were shocked when the airport and hotels and so much of the city were back up and running within a few days and everything was still on. When we arrived, there was a lot of debris from trees, and still some underground parking lots being drained, but we were continually impressed by every person we met who was so positive about the circumstances, and were so grateful to be getting back to normal life. It was a humbling experience for sure.

We wanted a relaxing family trip (as relaxing as traveling with three little boys can be), so it was important for us to stay at a hotel that had restaurants and activities on the property, or close by, so we didn’t have to move around too much. And the Mandarin Oriental, Miami was just that.

It’s just across a bridge from the heart of downtown, right up on the water with a spectacular view of downtown and the Miami River, and with a five star restaurant, five star spa, an amazing pool, fitness center, park, and private beach on site, plus the boardwalk just outside, there’s really no reason we ever had to leave.

We did sneak away one day to visit the brand new Frost Science Museum, which had lots of fun things to see and do, and my kids absolutely loved it. We also made our way down to South Beach to dip our toes in the Atlantic, cause we couldn’t be that close and not go!

The morning before we left, I booked myself a massage and snuck away for a little me-time before everyone else got up (the boys slept in so late thanks to amazing hotel black out shades). The Mandarin Oriental, Miami spa greeted me with pomegranate herbal tea, then led me into the waiting area where they had healthy snacks and like five different fruit infused waters. The actual massage room was on the second floor and overlooked the city and the river with huge windows, and the Digital Wellness treatment I got was specifically for people who work on their phones and computers a lot, so it focused on my neck, shoulders, and the pressure points on my feet. It was by far the best massage I’ve ever had.

But more than anything, I think the highlight of our stay though was the food. We’re huge foodies, and we love trying new cuisines. The on-site restaurant, La Mar, is modern Peruvian food, and I wish I could describe all the things we ate. I think the highlight for me was the parmesan scallops, but honestly everything we ate was unreal amazing. The restaurant was also open for breakfast, and had a delicious breakfast buffet, where we practically ate our weight in fresh fruit and pastries every morning.
