Although I still have several more outfits from Alt to share, two of them have tutorials that I’m still working on creating, so I figured I’d share an outfit from my last day there.
On Saturday, after Alt Summit was over, we spent the morning and afternoon in downtown Salt Lake for a fun collaboration with Sephora (more on that coming soon!), and then met up with my little brother and grandparents for lunch at the Garden Room. After lunch, we met up with Madeline, from Uber Chic for Cheap, who was even sweeter and pretty in person, and after an afternoon of chatting and a quick stop at her house to meet her darling babies and see her gorgeous home, she whisked us off to the airport to catch our flights home.
This tunic, tights, and jacket combo seemed like the perfect outfit for a morning of running around and then a flight home, but with all the time we spent outdoors that day, I was majorly regretting my outfit choice within about thirty seconds of leaving the hotel. I should have brought some knee high boots, leg warmers, a parka, a hat, and some gloves to complete the look. Clearly the California girl inside of me has taken over because even after eight years of living there, I had completely forgotten how frigid a day in January in Utah really is. Duly noted.

I have done this same thing too many times to count here in NY – I think it's just wishful thinking on my part that the winter will be over soon! At least you looked cute, even if it wasn't very practical 🙂

Aww, I'm sorry you were cold. Luckily, this is just the right sort of outfit year round in San Francisco. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have made that mistake, too! It's currently -23*C outside and I constantly think I'm okay to just go outside without a scarf or gloves. I'm used to BC weather, not Alberta, haha!
You're gorgeous, and your outfit was gorgeous regardless of how practical it was!
Love this look! That dress + booties + jacket is perfect!! Love your style!

I have a brand new pair of those exact boots if anyone wants to buy them from me. I bought them online and the sizing was off so they don't fit me. To get a refund I have to send them back to China, which costs more than they are worth. They said they are size 8 but they fit more like a 7 or 7.5. Email me if you are interested! I have measurements and pictures! [email protected] (Merrick, feel free to delete this comment if you find it annoying, but I thought it might help someone out if they wanted those exact booties).
Definitely not annoying — sorry to hear they didn't fit! But just FYI, mine were a little snug when I got them (as were a friends when she got them), but both of ours stretched out within one or two wears and now are perfect. So you might consider hanging on to them if you do like them!
These pics are gorgeous! Now that I know you are also a tripod/remote photog, I am wondering how you get such great pics!? Would LOVE if you'd do a post on what you keep your camera settings on for your pics? I ALWAYS use flash and keep my ISO at 100 because I want crisp bright photos but would love to learn how to take pics w/o flash some day. =)
Also, when I moved to NYC, I wore OPEN TOED shoes in the snow on my first night out and quickly got the nickname California. =)

These ones actually aren't tripod — my sister took these when we were in Salt Lake together 🙂
And I also always shoot in manual and bump my ISO if I need more light. Then I always boost the exposure in photoshop to give an overall brighter look. Hope that helps!
Love this outfit, even if it wasn't practical! I do that all the time. I always think, "eh, it's not that cold, right?" Instant regret right when I walk out the door. Lovely photos!
This outfit is super cute! Sad that you had to be freezing cold while wearing it though!

I loooooved this outfit on you! I am still so glad we had a chance to get together before you and Janssen flew out.
xoxo
Well you look really cute even if you were freezing, love the dress!

For a Mormon girl your dresses/skirts continue to get shorter and shorter. Especially where you work with the young women…it seems like modesty and setting an example would be priority. Even if the tights are opaque…it makes no difference. I never understood my some people find it modest. Tight clothing whether jeans, leggings, opaque tights are still immodest. While I do truly love you blog and think you are beautiful it seems like over the course of your blog your skirts get higher and higher and you are more comfortable in clothing that many Mormons would definitely consider immodest. Sorry…I just had to say something. I have friends who agree with me as well.
Hi A, thanks for your comment. Modesty and setting an example, especially for my young women, is ALWAYS a priority for me, and I never take that role lightly. I am always careful about what I wear, and the image I portray on this blog and how it reflects my standards. I don't personally think that a tunic and leggings are immodest, but I understand your point of view and respect that. I would obviously never wear this top here without tights or leggings. If you look back at every outfit photo I've posted on this blog, I hope you'll notice that all of my skirts and dresses are an appropriate length, and nothing I wear would be considered immodest, and that I'm upholding my standards in the world of fashion. xo, Merrick
Wow…I am actually very surprised you didn't delete my comment. I have just noticed in the world of LDS Women lately that many straddle the line between what is modest and what is not. It just seems like that letter of the law is more important than the spirit of the law to most. Rolling the garment or wearing the skirt just barely covering (which means it can get quite short) seems common place. But I am glad that you are conscience of it and do put out great modest outfits. The one in this post I personally find I wouldn't wear tights(none opaque) with a short skirt…so why would opaque tights or leggings be any different. They still show everything. I really appreciate your honesty though and have wanted to get other LDS opinions so I appreciate your response.
Hey Merrick, just wanted to say I think you’re super classy. You could Not have given a more gracious response to A jOnes who was trying to shame you (and apparently other bloggers) and in the name of her “friends who agree with her.” Wow. Just wow. I don’t know. There’s probably no objective ranking of values, but I would put the value of kindness an infinite amount of notches above “modesty,” especially when modesty standards themselves are completely subjective. Way to take the high road. I appreciate all the quality content you put out there. Haters gone hate. Glad you can shake it off with the best of them.
I totally understand the wearing a cute outfit and loving it but then having it be so inappropriate for the weather ! It looks amazing though !

Loving this outfit! The red lipstick is perfect. I really should just finally buy that one in heatwave. 🙂
Well, for what it's worth, you LOOK amazing. 🙂 I LOVE Uber Chic for Cheap! I don't interact with her much, but hers was one of the first blogs I found after Kendi's and J's. Been following for a couple of years!
One thing I need to do better is vocalize compliments when I think them. When I met you in Sephora (which I still think was so super cool, btw!), I loved your outfit, loved your hair, and really, really loved your lipstick! You are just a beauty and such a nice person. As far as the lipstick goes, one of my friends and I were talking about that shade right after I had talked to you, but that Sephora location had sold out! I think she was going to order it online.
As far as the weather, I think living in Houston turned me into a wimp for life. I have a hard time with cold now, but love where I live, so I do my best to tolerate it. 🙂
You are so nice! I'd never worn this lipstick before but they put it on me at Sephora and I fell in love with it! Such a perfect orangey-red 🙂
Ooooo! I'm excited about the Sephora bit! I was introduced about 4 years ago and though I don't feel like my budget can handle a a full makeup bag worth, I certainly splurge now and again.
Hey I loved that jacket on you and also saw it on another blogger so I decided to get it. But now that its here it doesn't look exactly the same as yours. Did you alter yours to make it shorter? I am deciding whether or not to keep mine because it is also slightly big.
