The Best Apps for Kids that Don’t Require Wifi

best apps for kids that don't need wifi

During the holidays, a lot of families end up traveling whether by plane or road tripping in the car. It can be hard to keep the little ones entertained on long trips without internet. Today I’m excited to be sharing a huge list of the best apps for kids that don’t need wifi or data!

Here are the ones that ended up being our favorites (but I’ve included the entire list of your recommendations at the bottom of the post).

YouTube Red [Free trial, then $7.99/mo]. This is a great app that allows you to download youtube content to your phone. Fos is obsessed with Art For Kids Hub videos right now, so I downloaded six or seven of them before our flight so he could draw on the plane. Then I deleted them and downloaded a bunch more for the flight home. When I signed up, it had a 3 months free trial deal, but I think currently it’s 1 month free.

Netflix App [FREE – need a paid account to log in]. If you already have a netflix account, this is a really great app to have for traveling. You can download episodes straight to your phone so you can watch them without streaming.

Stack the States [$2.99] We LOVED this one. It has trivia about the states, and when you get the correct answer, the state falls down onto a platform and you try to stack them up to reach a designated line. Some of the states are not very easy to balance and your stack comes crashing down. I played it too and had a blast.

Tozzle [$2.99]. This a great drag and drop puzzle game for toddlers and little kids. I also love that it automatically has a parental lock.

Tozzle Words [$1.99]. This is a great one for kids learning to spell. It has the same drag and drop system as Tozzle. My only complaint about it is that it doesn’t seem to have any kind of direction that tells you what you’re supposed to do. It gives you a few clues here and there of where you’re supposed to click, but I had a hard time getting the train to go where it was supposed to, and the animals to do what they were supposed to. But it’s still educational and fun.

Quick Math Jr. [FREE] This one is fun for early learners. Simple math and counting, and you earn pieces to build your own monster.

Sudoku [FREE] My almost eight year old is really into Sudoku lately, so I downloaded this app right before we left. My husband actually ended up playing it while the kids were watching a movie, so it’s good for all ages 😉

Duck Duck Moose TRUCKS [FREE] San is obsessed with trucks right now so this was a great app for him. It’s very basic, but you can tap the different trucks and make them splash in the mud and then go through the car wash, pick up the garbage and recycling, or scoop up and dump dirt with a dump truck and digger. He spent a good amount of time on this app during our flights.

Below are all the other apps you shared, but I wanted to share one other quick tip…

Have you heard of Guided Access??

It’s a capability on your iPhone that allows you to lock the phone in a single app, so if your toddler pushes the home button it doesn’t automatically bump them off and cause frustration.

Get to it in your Settings app > General > Accessibility > Guided Access.

You set a passcode so you can unlock it, and then to start Guided Access, triple-click the home button on your phone when you’re in the app. To unlock it, triple-click again and enter your passcode.

This is seriously a mom’s best friend. Turn yours on right now!

[I’m sure Androids have something similar, but I don’t know what it is. If you know, leave a comment and share!]
