For this round of Sister’s Share It All, it was my pick, and I chose “Your Favorite Item in Your Closet.” When I decided on this topic, I didn’t realize how hard it would be to choose one favorite — I mean, the obvious choice was my beloved Target v-neck tees (of which I probably have ten, in every possible color), but I wanted to show something a little more fun and interesting.
So, the next best choice was my polka dot maxi skirt. I’m almost embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve worn this thing since I made it a few weeks ago. I keep running into the same people and realize I’m wearing it again, and I just hope they don’t notice.
Anyway, it’s one of those clothing items that can be worn so many ways, all while being insanely comfortable, pregnant or not. It’s perfect for summer, it’s perfect for fall and winter…it’s just the perfect item. No wonder it’s my fave. And now here are four different ways that I style it:
And here’s a little breakdown, as well as some slightly larger images.
1. Casual:
v-neck tee: old navy (shop) // sandals: target // necklace & watch: gift from Philip |
Paired with a simple gray v-neck tee (which, shockingly, is NOT from Target…), sandals, a high pony tail, and super minimal jewelry, it’s really casual and perfect for lounging around on the weekends, or taking your baby to the park, all while still looking cute.
2. Pattern Mixing
t-shirt: target // shoes: steve madden via plato’s closet // necklace: gift from my mom |
To me, a subtle polka dot pattern just begs to be paired with another pattern or two. A really simple striped tee in the same colors, and a fun pair of leopard peep-toes makes the outfit feel thought out and a little more dressed up, even though you’re still just wearing a maxi skirt and t-shirt. Throw on a bold but neutral necklace, and we’re in business.
3. Unexpected:
cardigan: cozy // belt: target // wedges: payless (shop) // bangles: gift from my in-laws |
A few months ago, I saw Sydney wear a maxi skirt pulled up as a dress. Ever since then I’ve been anxious to try it. Although with an 8-month pregnant belly it does feel a little tent-ish to me (even with a belt), I love the idea and plan to do it a lot more often after I have this baby and can put the belt at my natural waist. Also, I loooove the navy polka dots with mustard — they are a match made in heaven.
3. Ready for Fall:
sweater: target (shop) // mary jane wedges: target |
I’m loving all the oversized sweaters for fall right now. It might be because I know that in six weeks time I’ll have a little baby weight to camouflage, but it’s also because the slouchy look is so effortless and comfy — just what you want to be wearing on those cold rainy or snowy days when you’re cuddled up on the couch with a cup of cocoa. Am I wrong? Paired with a maxi skirt and a pair of boots (or brown mary jane wedges, in my case), it just screams fall to me, and I love it.

Excellent choice! I have a polka dot skirt (although it's not a maxi) and I never get tired of wearing it. Aaaand I just posted my outfit of the day link for ya…wearing my new wedge boots that could very well become a new closet favorite. Check back in February and see how many times I wear them over the winter 🙂

I love the way you pulled your maxi skirt up to wear it as a dress! Definitely trying that this year. And of course love the polka dots, period.

Oooh, my favorite is the mustard yellow paired with it – looks great!
You look fantastic! I LOVE the stripes + dots. I wouldn't have thought it would work, but it so, so does!
Stripes and dots is one of my favorites, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've ever worn them together!! Definitely on my To Do list now!

Merrick,
I love your blog! When I found your blog a few months ago and after reading through posts one of the first things I did was call my mom, who asks at the beginning of January what I'd like for Christmas, and told her I wanted a sewing machine. Thank you for the inspiration!
Have you ever tried something along the lines of this? http://pinterest.com/pin/73746512619415564/
Can't go wrong with polka dots 😉

it was refreshing reading your posts :).
I have been coveting your mustard cardi for ages. It just look awesome with everything! Finally I found one and tried it on, which was when I had to concede that colors which look amazing on brunettes do not fly with us strawberry-blondes. Oh well. I will still covet yours every time you post a pic.
Love your combination really. Thank you
