Welcome to boot camp! Today we’re talking all about DRESSY BOOTS. Specifically pointed-toe ankle boots, and what pants to wear with them, how to style them, and where to wear them.
If you don’t have a pair of dressy boots in your wardrobe, I think that pointed toe ankle boots are a closet essential. They’re great to dress up or down and can be worn with so many fall, winter and even spring outfits. Today, I’ll explain how to wear pointed-toe booties for different occasions, what pants, skirts, and dresses to wear, what socks to pair them with and so much more. I’ll break down everything you ever wanted to know about these kinds of ankle boots!
My current favorite pair of dressy boots
I found THIS PAIR of black dressy boots a few months ago and fell in love with them. They’ll be getting tons of use this fall and winter.
They’re waterproof, have a nice slim shaft so you don’t get a blocky ankle, and they’re a beautiful pointed toe with a comfortable block heel.
They come in a few other colors, but the other colors looked cheap to me (especially the bright brown). The black looks expensive and is gorgeous.

What socks I wear with block heel ankle boots
When your shoes have really low slits on the sides, a super low sock is best so it doesn’t show much (or at all). I honestly almost never wear socks with block heel ankle boots like this, but if you need socks, try MY FAVORITE NO SHOW SOCKS, or if you want something super low, TRY THESE ONES!
If your boots don’t have a low cut side, or you want a sock sticking out, my favorite everyday socks and boot socks are both linked in THIS POST.
Where to wear the boots
These boots are endlessly versatile for nicer occasions. Here are some places they work really well:
- the office
- date night
- church
- concerts
- girls nights
- baby and bridal showers
- traveling for nicer nights out when you want a comfy shoe
What kind of pants/jeans/lengths can you wear with pointed toe ankle boots
You’ll see a bunch of outfit ideas below, and see that they’re versatile with basically all lengths! Try them with full length trousers or pants, longer cropped length pants (not capris!), and they also work with longer and shorter dresses and skirts. Wear them with anything when you want to feel elevated and/or keep your feet warm!
How big should your ankle gap be when wearing cropped pants, dresses, and skirts?
This is going to be somewhat personal preference, but I’d recommend keeping your ankle gap small, like 1-2″ at the most, especially with boots and pant that are much different from your skin color. For black pants and black boots, I don’t want a large white strip of skin sticking out and becoming a focal point. So I keep those outfits as small of an ankle gap as possible, if any. For lighter colored boots and outfits, I can get away with a bigger gap. You figure out what works for yours with some trial and error!

My favorite pairing is with denim and a plaid jacket. A leopard print skirt looks dramatic and acts as an accent without being overpowering.
