Back in July I went up to the LA fabric district with my best friend, Leanne, to do a little birthday fabric shopping. I’ve been looking for a great quality striped knit for ages, and Mood didn’t disappoint. I snatched up a couple yards of this gorgeous ponte knit and couldn’t wait to cut into it.
I’ve been wanting a striped peplum top, and this was perfect for that. I’ve been in the mood for fall lately, so I made it long sleeved. It’s cozy and comfortable, and is easy to dress up or down.
Another fun striped piece is coming your way in a few weeks for DIY Friday, so check back soon!

Materials:
Materials: 1 yard 60″ wide knit fabric (I used this one)

1. First cut your pattern pieces. (Use this video tutorial if you don’t know how to do this). You’ll need a BODICE FRONT (cut on the folded edge), a BODICE BACK  (cut on the folded edge) NECKLINE LINING (cut 2 along the folded edge), SLEEVES (cut 2, along the folded edge), and a long rectangular piece for the PEPLUM (or two if your fabric isn’t long enough. Then sew the two pieces together to make one long piece).

To find the measurements for your peplum: measure across the width of your front bodice piece. Then use this equation. 1.5(bodice width x 2) = peplum width. The length should be about 10 inches depending your height.
2. Sew darts into your BODICE FRONT piece. This is optional — I’m flat chested enough that they’re not always necessary with stretchy fabric. Include them if you need to!

3. Sew the BODICE FRONT and two BODICE BACK pieces together at the shoulder seams (with right sides together).

4. Now it’s time to attach the sleeves. Line up the top of the sleeve with the bodice shoulder seam (as shown) with right sides together. Pin in place.

5. Continue pinning the sleeve to the bodice, and then sew along the arm hole with a straight stitch. Repeat for the second sleeve.

6. With right sides together, sew the sides of the bodice up with a straight stitch.

7. Sew the two NECKLINE LINING pieces together, with right sides together, to make a circle. Then, with right sides together, pin the NECKLINE LINING to the neckline of the BODICE. Stretch as you go so it fits evenly around the neckline. Sew around the neckline with a straight stitch, stretching as you sew so you don’t get any tucks. Flip the NECKLINE LINING inside and press your seams flat, then sew around the entire neckline again with a wide straight stitch to secure the NECKLINE LINING in place.

8. Take your two PEPLUM pieces and, with right sides together, sew the short ends together, as shown.

9. Now sew around the edge of the entire loop of fabric with a basting stitch.

10. Pull the basting stitch strings to gather the peplum. Gather it until it’s roughly the same size as the bottom of your BODICE.

11. With right sides together, pin the PEPLUM to the BODICE, and sew around it with a straight stitch.

12. Hem your sleeves and your peplum to your desired length, and you’re done!

    Hi Merrick,
I’m Carmen from Italy, I follow you everyday, I love sewing for me too. You may already know but I’m telling you anyway: the shoulder seams are too low. Also you didn’t sew the darts.
    I love the shoes.
(Also, the app you have on your front page called foursixty stopped working, the last photo is from May 31)
Keep on with the good working, girl!

I’m sorry if you answered this elsewhere but when you’re gonna sew a peplum the length of the peplum part should be double the length of the bottom of the bodice?

Hello! This is so cute! My question is…would this work for a light weight flannel? Or must it be knit fabric?

    • Merrick says:

You can use any kind of fabric! Just make sure if you’re using a non-stretchy fabric that you make it loose enough to slip over your head or add a zipper up the back 🙂

  13. Paige Williams says:

Thanks so much for the tutorial, I love the peplum!! I’m going to try to make it, just in a solid color. The stripes are a little beyond my sewing skills.
